Question about 2006 Chevrolet Colorado

1 Answer

After having a dead battery, bought a new one and now system wont charge battery. I had been in a hurry when installing a battery, and arced the cables, which blew the fuse for the radio, but I can't find anything else. Took the alternator in and had it checked, seems to be fine.

2009 jeep commandeer wont start, when I turn the key there is no sound, lights wont turn on and is that wasn't enough the key gets stuck in the ignition. any ideas?

it wont crank, no A/t car starts unless cranked first. (a key point)

fix head lights first. this is a feature in all cars.

that is SIMPLE and HOT all the time

they must work at all times and is the top way to diagnose

electric problems

you have a dead battery,.

only why remains.

i bet it cranks jumper cable started, call AAA or buy some cables.

or swap in a charged battery , or heck charge yours, buy a charger.

check fuses.

check battery lugs for green death?

check battery voltage. at 12.6vdc, if not charge the battery

if the battery continues to disgharge.

that is called phantom drains, or bad battery .

or the alternators is bad.(system)

once started the battery volts must be 13.3.to 15v, if not the charge system is bad ,(fuses, belts slipping and lots more possibles)

2000 Ford Ranger is killing alternators immediately after install

the best way to test an alternator is with a load test-partstores dont do that--battery may still have a bad cell even tho it tested good--an alternator can burn up charging a completely dead batt--make sure batt reads at 12.6volts and no less-----if it reads say at 12.3 its only 50% charged!

Dead battery, replaced battery and alternator but still no charge!

if its not charging while running at14.5 volts or so you have a charging problem mabey no power to the alternator if its charging at 14.5 or so and the batery load tests good and its going dead over night you have a draw from some component in the system.

My truck sat for acouple months ,and the battery went dead so i charged it and when iput it back in it arcs out like it has a dead short it ran fine before this nothing else was touched except the battery

IT is common for the batteries to arc when connectiong the last one up. On a side note if it is arcing enough to weld the cable to teh battery you have something wrong, but it you get a slight arc when connecting them, than that is ok.

call the store where you bought the alternator. most likely you will have to remove it and exchange it for another rebuilt one.

Bought new alternator and installed it and still cuts off if not connected to jumper cables???

its probly not charging or you might want to test the battery might be bad also did you have the old altenator tested check for power to voltage regulator at the alt to see if there is power presnt otherwise it will never charge without that power wire hot with key on engine off.

Altenator will not charge battery

seems to me you neglected to reinstall the ground cable body (to the eng.) possibly?
What did the 'new' engine come out of?
I hope you bought the alternators from auto zone or something and are getting them replaced under the lifetime warranty...

This is what I would do... remove the battery cable from the battery after you shut of everything in the car... lights blower fan et al... and see if you are getting an arc when you reattach it. That will give you a clue to whether a dead short is involved (if it arcs strong ) .
if you only get a spark it is normal , as there are draws that you can't dislocate w/o removing fuses.
If you dont get the dead short arc , then put a lead on the - NEG. post and ground the neg. to the engine dirrectly from the battery to any bolt on the engine bigger than 10mm. ( a bracket or the instilation hooks on the eng. should give you a reliable ground. if that causes an arc while the car is running my first thought is correct.
The lack of a good solid ground to the engine will cause the stalling out due to the numerous electrical componants that do thier job via variations in voltage. This voltage is measured in very small incriments,
and any deviation from set limits will cause your engine to run poorly.
It is my assumption that your battery starts the car , then the sole source of electric is being drawn from the altenater .
