Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

2001 Grand Prix 3.8l won't start after it has been driven and at normal temp. Turns over but will start until engine is cooled down. Thanks, Glenn

Cam sensor, more than likely, or a coolant temp sensor malfunction. Usually what goes on with these symptoms.

When car slows down heat cools down


when you have that problem , almost all the time is the heater core clogged , you can have the engine running until reach normal temperature and touch both heater hoses at the fire wall, if one is hot and the other is not them the problen is your heater core.

that is not normal. sounds like you have the start of a bad intake manifold gaskt leak coming . GM 3.8 have bad intake gaskets. there something I want you to check please. My 06 Grand Prix was getting hot, not overheating, but getting hot. The O2 sensor was replaced just prior to the problem, the radiator was flushed, the Thermostat was replaced, then the water pump blew...


You should make sure there is no air in the cooling system-from a cold start, let it idle until the radiator fan kicks on with the surge tank cap off-make sure the tank is fully up to level at this point, that should eliminate air in the system as a cause. If you do not have a scanner that gives live readings, get one so you can monitor the engine temp-a factory gauge is not overly accurate. Your temp when warmed up, air off should go to about 212-215 and the radiator fan should then kick on-temp should drop to about 200 and the fan should shut off-this is normal.

It is possible that your thermostat is stuck open. Normally, the thermostat remains closed when starting cold, confining coolant to the engine block and cylinder head until it heats up. Once the coolant in the block is warm (usually within 10 minutes), the thermostat begins to open and let coolant flow into the radiator to cool it down some. A properly operating thermostat will continue to cycle until the coolant reaches the operating temperature of the thermostat--usually around 180 deg F. Then the thermostat will continue to adjust its opening to maintain that temp.

Thermostats can get stuck in both closed and open positions. When stuck closed, the engine will quickly overheat. When stuck open, the engine will take forever to warm up--especially in cold weather because the coolant is continually pushed into the radiator and cooled off before it ever has a chance to get warm. Changing the inexpensive thermostat may help correct your condition.

My check engine light is on, and today my temperature gauge stopped working and we have replaced the engine coolant sensor and the connector and temperature gauge still not working. PLEASE HELP


Could be the thermostat. I know nothing about cars but I noticed my 2000 Grand Prix temp gauge was not going to the normal level. My wife drives this car so I didn't notice it for a month or so. Eventually the Engine light came on. Took it to Autozone and the code came back as P0180... (1) low coolant (2) bad thermostat (3) enginge fuel temp sensor. They used a code reader that was about the size of an Ipod nano.

Coolant was okay, so took it to my mechanic. His netbook sized computer showed it was the Thermostat. He reset the codes and the temp guage went back to normal. Was short on $40 for the fix at the time, so I parked the car and promised to bring it back in 3 days. Went out and checked the car a day later at 25 degrees outside without starting the car... gauge still sitting at the normal level. No question it's the thermostat. That car will not be driven again until T.stat is fixed in 2 days.

Does anyone make an oe fan switch for a 1994 pont grand prix 3.1 that turns the fans on, between 190 to 200 that will shut them off at 180


The vehicle computer turns the fan on and off. It determines when to turn it on from the signal it receives from the coolant sensor. It does not turn it on at 190 or 200, that is barely normal operating temp. it usally comes on around 225. To run the fan at those temps. would not be good for the performance of the engine, it would make it run to cool, so I don't think you will find your switch from an OE source.

Many cars have a thermoswitch threaded into the radiator that activates the fans when engine exceedes normal optimum opperating temp. This sensor may have failed , or one of the 2 wires that go to it may have come unpluged or broken

Temp gauge goes to full hot while at Idle


Check the auxiliary cooling fan for operation. As the engine temp rises, it should kick on to bring the temp down. U may have a bad motor on the fan, or more likely a bad fan switch.
