When i try to sart it the engine turns over but it will not fire, the fuel pump does not run when I turn on the ignition switch either. A local machanic looked at it and said it is not getting any fire along with the fuel pump not coming on. He does not have the vw part for his computer in order to solve the problem.

It more than likely is a fuel pump, or relay. Yes you could scan it, but if unable to, you need to go by the elimination process. Check fuses/relays first, then it will almost definately be the pump.

The engine just dies when going down the road and when I try to re-start, the motor won't turn over. Why is this happening?

You didn't tell us is you have the 4 banger, 3.0 or 4.0 V6 engine.

The engine can stall for a number of reasons. For a engine to run it requires air, fuel, compression, and spark at the proper time. I doubt air is the problem. The fuel pump may be cutting out (bad pump, bad relay, bad pump wiring inside the tank (my 93 3.0 Ranger had the last issue). The engine stall could be a lack of fire to the plugs. A bad (cracked) coil, ignition module problem, EFI computer or wiring problem, or maybe an ignition switch problem. The starting system is somewhat isolated and pretty much separate from the ignition system in general. This makes me suspicious of your ignition switch.

Without a voltmeter and a wiring diagram, you're in a bit of a fix. But I would be wondering why the ignition switch isn't sending power to the coil primary positive terminal, and why it isn't causing the fuel pump to be turned on, too.
Is your check engine light on with key on? The computer should sense ignition is on and briefly turn on the fuel pump through the fuel pump relay, on just long enough to pressurize the fuel line to the injector. But no fuel or fire-you'd better start by checking if the ignition switch has power in and power out, and work your way to the coil.

1990chevy suburban 2500 350 died while driving and won't restart I can hear the fuel pump turn on I have changed the fuel filter and still nothing what's next

check for spark, no spark, no fire engine wont run, possible bad ignition coil, wire from coil to distributor cap, no power to ignition coil from ignition switch (rare) wire broken to ignition coil (even rarer)

Wont start, no spark anywhere

Check the spark, remove the fuse to the fuel pump and remove one of the spark plugs. Connect the plug to its lead and position it well away from the engine against the truck frame (do not hold it) and turn the engine over, check the spark. If no spark it most probably a faulty coil. Check the impedance of the spark plug leads and replace any that are much higher than the rest. My guess is that you have spark but no fuel, What?... OK this is what I think is wrong. Your pump is fine when at position 2 on the ignition switch however when you switch to position three to fire the engine the power to the fuel pump is momentarily disconnected. A leaking fuel pressure regulator or injector would drop the pressure in the fuel line and at the same time flood the engine making it impossible to start. Once you start the engine with ether the ignition is back to position 2 and the pump can make good any loss in pressure but because the intake mix is rich this will cause the engine to run rich too. A good fuel system is capable of delivering 40 - 50PSI of fuel pressure and when switched off up to 90% of this pressure should be maintained for about 5 minutes, if it cannot check out the fuel pressure regulator and injectors. The fuel pipe should be capable of filling a pint pot in about 15 seconds, if it cannot check out the fuel filter is clogged.
Hope the above gives you some pointers

Ive got a 1997 cavalier it will start but quickly dies out ive got fire to my plugs and fuel to the injectures ive just replaced the ignition switch is there somkind of a security

You need a new fuel pump relay. The engine fires up and runs off the oil pressure switch untill the oil pressure PSI is reached at normal operating conditions. When the oil pressure reaches its operating PSI the PCM or engines computer will shut off that circuit and turns on the fuel pump relay to run the fuel pump untill you shut the engine off

1993 jimmy 4.3 liter wont prime the injectors before statring....if i spray carb cleaner into the intake, it will start and run fine.

I would first change the fuel filter could be clogged over time.
When you first turn the key in the ignition switch. Listen for the fuel pump in the tank should be turning on. You may have to get under the car and listen to the fuel pump coming on when some one else turns the key. The fuel pump should turn on a few seconds before trying to start. IF the fuel pump is coming on. The fuel pump itself is not holding the pressure anymore after sitting a while.
I would take to a local shop to check it out if the fuel filter does not work.
