Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

I HAVE EXACTLY THWE SAME SITUATION LISTED IN THE DETAILS/

I have a '03 Galant ES and my heater just went out. I'm not sure what the problem is, the fans work but it only disperses cold air. It was making this funny clanking noise whenever I would switch it from hot to cold or vise versa. Now it doesn't make that noice anymore, but my heat doesn't work. I checked my coolant and I'm topped off, and I'm not running hot or overheating so I don't think it's my thermostat. I also don't have a puddle of water on my floorboard so I don't think it's the heater core. I was thinking it may be a heater door actuator but do niot want to start tearing into it unless I know where to start.

A thermostat that is stuck open will cause there to be no heat. If its closed is when you will run hot or overheat.

not exactly same steps but similar. Most cars I have worked on the screws were along the bottom and on the arm rest. Make sure you remove all screws some may be under a access panel. Use caution when pulling on clips

Did you replace the thermostat? If it is stuck open the coolant may not get hot enough to be effective.

There have not been Tune-ups in 25 years

Overheating and heater blowing cold air.

Heres the answer for the clicking sound

I had the exact same problem, yes it was the heater control valve, the repair was 285.00. The tech that replaced it told me it is a common problem for the Galant. He said that if you keep your temp selector on either all hot or all cold that it keeps constant pressure on the plastic gear teeth in the valve. As they break off one by one you begin to hear that clicking noise as the dont catch. When you finally break off the last one it stops working.

According to him if you always leave the dial at least one notch from fully hot or fully cold you will not experience a failure of the switch

My 2000 mitsubishi galant es went dead, motor will turn over but

do you have spark? How do you know if your timing belt is good? sometimes it doesnt break just shed the teeth which could be missing under the crankshaft. The best way to check is to have two people. have one try to start the car and see if the camshaft is actually spinning. The crankshaft will always turn but if the teeth are gone on timing belt this would cause the belt to stay in one position not moving the camshaft. so if you can remove the upper timing belt cover and do this quick inspection with someone that will tell you for sure. if it does look like it is spinning then by hand turn engine very slowly with plug coil wires removed. and make sure teeth are all there. It couldve jumped timing. (valve timing)

Heater not dispersing hot air

There ia an actuator that controls the flap to change from hot to cold. You have to pull the bottom part of the dash and the whole blower motor housing. The part you are looking for is located just behind the radio and has an arm that goes into the heater core line. That is the piece you need. Its around $165 dollars and a dealer only part. And hope you have someone that can do it because mitsubishi charges over $500 in labor.
