Question about 1988 Pontiac Fiero

1 Answer

My hidden lights will not come on--the headlight motors will not raise my headlights. What should I check first? I have a 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT Coupe and the battery had gone dead a few months sitting in my garage. I installed a new battery about a month ago. I didn't know if there are fuses to check or what. (Now you're talking to a woman who doesn't know much about cars.) Is it something complex that I should take to a mechanic or can I get my son to check something?

My left headlight door wont open when i turn the lights on 1985 pontiac fiero

If you open the hood, behind the headlight assembly you will see the motor that lifts the headlight, there is a knob that you can rotate to manually to crank up the headlight until you repair it.

Before you put it up manually, turn on the headlights with the hood open and listen to see of the motor is making noise, if it is you can try a repair kit, otherwise get a replacement from the auto part store or junk yard.

Here is a handy place for Fiero parts including the headlight repair kit I mentioned:

Hope this helps

1985 Fiero: headlights will not go back down...

Fiero headlights are headaches, especially the early years (84-86). Be glad they are stuck up and not down!

Does it make a grinding noise or anything while trying to go back down?

If so, the internal nylon gears are worn and need to be replaced with metal ones and good lithium grease.

If no noise while trying to go down, then it's a power problem. Check the blue connector going to the headlamp, careful in this area, they motors can turn on/off suddenly if the power is restored to them. Don't get your hand caught in there!

There are also relays to check, 1 for each motor and 1 main one for the headlamps, get a haynes manual to find them. They are little black boxes.

Also, could be your on/off headlight switch, take it out of the dash to see if wires are loose.

There are lots of forums online about these headlights and how to fix them. Look around and good luck!

The headlight motors on my 1985 pontiac fiero do not work.

Even a good motor will have trouble turning a rusted headlight shutter. Start with a good dose of PB Blaster or equivalent. Work the shutter manually, (you may have to disconnect the motor temporarily). That also gives you a chance to check the motor for turning without a load on it. If they don't turn it could be a 12v system fuse or bad motors. Either way, your going to be the expert on them when your done.

1985 Fiero: headlight doors will not open

Your headlight motors are bad. Pre-87 cars had a terrible problem with this, upgrade them to the 87-up style. Firebird/Corvette motors are the same.

Fierro RH Headlight does not flip up

It could possibly be the relay that's located on the headlight assembly. Good replacements can be found in almost any junkyard Fiero. First, check to be sure the single blue wire is connected. It's on the inboard side of the headlight, and the connection looks like an inline fuse holder. Then turn the headlights on. Using a ballpoint pen so as not to injure your fingers, insert it into one of the holes in the knob atop the motor and turn it clockwise. This should start to raise the headlight. If it doesn't activate and raise upon its own, then it's the relay. If the motor just sits and spins when you turn it on, then it's the gear inside. You can obtain a rebuild kit from www.rodneydickman.com
