Assuming...you get the noise with the vehicle moving; try loading up one side at a time by doing lane changes when you hear the grind. If the noise increases & then decreases as you go from side to side then you probably have a bad wheel bearing. Also, You could just have a pebble caught between the backing plate & rotor! (they have a tendency to fall out quickly)

otad doesn't help ---did the trans come out of an 05 astro van s-10 blazer /jimmy s-15 or safari and it your awd because you need to match the rwd with an rwd and a awd with an awd /4wd from above and the unit has to be compatible with the 05

Rhythmic grinding noise front end - 98 chevy astro AWD

Could be low on oil, trans doesnt have fluid, wheel bearings are gone, or could be something stuck under the vehicle and either the tires or the drive axle is rubbing against it.

What will happen if i remove the shaft for the frontwheel drive from this alwheel drive 1998 chey astro

You will end up destroying the transfer case, The transfer case is electronic and not mechanical as the older ones and the speed sensors will throw off the transfer case, if you lose traction to the rear end in the rain, snow or around a corner. The transfer case may activate and deactivate and without the front drive shaft could result in the transfer case to literately explode, also know as grenade. At that point, your looking at a transfer case and may be a transmission. You van runs on RWD unless the rear wheel start to lose traction and then the encoder motor activates the transfer case turning your astro in too a AWD. This was done to save gas, the older AWD transfer case was casing the idle arm to wear out prematurely and the gas economy was 17 MPG and the new AWD system that you have brought the van to 22 MPG. Why do you want to remove it??? if you do i guess you can disconnect the wire harness to the Encoder motor to the transfer case. Good luck and keep me posted.

97 astro van awd there is a clicking in the front end only when driving straight, have replaced half shaft, wheel bearings, brakes, rotors, and calipers, and the noise is still there any ideas

Have it put on a rack, and spin the wheels, but don't spin them over 30mph, and go under vehicle and see if the noise will direct you to the problem.

2002 Chevy Astro van front end makes grinding noise

sounds like a possible wheel bearing issue or brake pad issue!!! i would definatly have this looked at, but in the meantime, make sure that it isnt just a backing plate contacting the rotor ...hope this was helpful!!

sounds like c/v axles (front drive shafts) they will make a clicking sound normally when turning sharp and accell at the same time at slow speeds / look at the axle boots and look for grease on the inside of the front wheels leaking out the axle boots
