Question about 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Power steering does not work when turning right.

A 2003 Cheverolet Tahoe, 4x4, AT, 5.3L power steering doesn't seem to work when turning to the right. It is fine when turning left but it is hard to turn when going right. The power steering pump was replaced but this did not solve the problem. Where and what should I look at replacing or fixing other than the power steering pump?

Is the intermediate steering shaft the steering box? Would the gears in the steering box need to be lubricated/grease?

1 Answer

First check your power steering fluid and make sure it is up to level. Next, make sure your power steering belt is not loose. After that, your intermediate steering shaft needs to be re-lubricated. Usually you can convince the dealer to pay for the repair even if the truck is out of warranty due to the fact that this is a well known GM problem

Power steering does not work turning right. what

Hi Ben,

Air in the line. Be sure the steering fluid level is up to the fill line.

Turn the wheel to the stops both ways a couple times.

Check the level again.

Repeat until the level remains static,

Best regards

My power steering whines making tight turns and becomes difficult to maneuver. I keep tabs on reservoir level and seems to be relatively unchanged. I have sprayed a degreaser around the area and do seem to...

Power steering does have to work harder for tight turns. If possible - keep the vehicle moving while turning, and keep tyre pressures up.
Unless you are getting leaks I wouldn't investigate further untill a failure occours.

The only thing I can recommend is you drain and replace the PS fluid at this stage, as it can loose lubricity over time.
Changing the aux belt at recommended intervals is also advised.

What might be wrong with my 2002 chevy tahoe if its taking a while to turn over. it does turn over but not as fast as it used too.

if the truck is cranking over slower the battery or the battery connection maybe loose, now if the engine is cranking over good but not starting right away you may have a fuel related problem

Steering problem

check your power steering belt. it may have broke or slipped off the pulley. if it seems ok check your fluid level. if it is still at normal operating level for hot or cold then your power steering pump may have just seized up and you may have to replace it.
