Check that wheel cyl.pistons are retracting.if new shoes were installed, turn adjustment wheel to move shoes inward.check that shoes are 'centered' on backing plate, and shoe retainers are in good order.

Rear drum brakes

Typical cavalier problem James,
First thing is to get drums off, the sandpaper the brake shoes, you'll see at the top and bottom of each shoe the only part of the shoes being used.I recommend picking up a new set of drums from Auto Zone, they are around $20.00 each. Now the last thing is back off the emergency adjuster about 5 threads, then you can adjust your drum brakes.

I have a 2002 ford focus and I cant get the rear drum off the back

IF IT IS DRUM BRAKES,YOU WILL HAVE TO GO BEHIND THE REAR DRUM AND ADJUST THE BRAKES TO ALLOW YOU TO REMOVE DRUM,PROBABLY A SPRING OR A ADJUSTER IS HUNG UP,IF YOU STILL CAN'T YOU WILL HAVE TO PRY THE DRUM OFF WITH A PRY BAR,ONCE YOU HAVE IT OFF REPLACE ALL HARDWARE AND SHOES.

2002 Chevrolet Cavalier the rear brakes lock up when you use them

This is usually caused by a leaking wheel cylinder allowing brake fluid on the brake shoes. The wheel cylinder actuates the brake pads when the brake pedal is depressed and only can be inspected by removing the brake drums.

How do you change rear brakes? There are rear brake drums and i cant get them off, are they rusted on or is there a trick to getting them off?

mcdevito75, The rear drums are on very tight, the time and effort to get them off, really isn"t worth it, and even if you do the remaining brakes could just fall apart. Let your local repair shop handle this job.

I NEED A PICTURE OF BRAKE DRUM INSIDES I DID THE REAR DRUM BRAKES AND NOW WHEN THEY ARE PRESSED HARD THEY CLUNK REALLY BAD WHAT COULD THAT BE?

Since they are new pads, they may not be worn in or the backing plates are not in and causes movement of the shoe when pressed hard or you may also notice the sound when you are stopped and let off the brake.

How to change rear drum brakes on 1991 cavalier

If you are familar with a front brake drum on a rear wheel drive vehicle, the procedure is the same, if you have not seen this in the past it might be wise to have a professional do the job. Brakes are not something you want to take a chance with.
