A couple of suspension problems can cause this to happen. Worn ball joints that are beginning to freeze up can cause the issue as well as tie-rod ends. You may want to lift the front end of the vehicle and with the engine off, turn the steering wheel from right full stop to left full stop. See if you notice any catching then releasing of the steering wheel, it will feel as though the steering gets slightly difficult then easier as you go from stop to stop.
Another issue that can cause this problem is the caster alignment. If the caster is not set properly, the steering will not return to center. If you do not feel comfortable about checking it your self, take it to your local front end alignment shop and they will usually evaluated it for you at no charge or a very minimal charge.
Good luck, let me know.
Regards,

Sounds like the king pin(s) need to be replaced. when they fail it won't return to center after a turn.

Bad ball joints can cause it not to return on its own. jack it up and see if the wheel moves side to side or up and down by hand. IF it moves more than a minimal amount ball joints are bad

Fairly common problem from what i've seen with these. Was a NEW one put in, or was it used or refurbished? You are most likely going to need to replace it again, I also recommend replacing the lines and make sure all chassis is lubed well.

The only way to check to see if the steering box is bad is to take to mechanic.

Hi there,

I think that problem is in your steering box and the valves are going out. first, check for loose steering and suspension parts, second check alignment without looking at vehicle.... If you jack the front tires off the ground then turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right (doesn't matter).. now try to rotate the wheel like it was going down the road.. you'll feel it get tight / loose / tight / loose as you spin it.  If they are real bad you won't be able to spin it by hand at all.
Thanks

What causes ford e350 steering not to return?

I have had similar occurrences , this is a heavy duty van with wide front tires, be sure that the tires are properly inflated, if that doesn't change anything, the dealer is right. This van will not steer the same as a car, because of it's size.

Ford E-350 Van steering problem

My guess would be the gear box. Its also possible one of the ball joints has seized up.
You should be able to lift the front end and take the pitman arm off the gear box to find out.

Steering box removal on a 1998 chevy k2500

Lock your steering wheel in place. You could run the seatbelt through it to do so. Disconnect the steering shaft front the steering box by removing the pinch bolt notice how it came out you may want to make reference marks to make sure it goes back the same way. . Disconnect the pitman arm from the center link. Disconnect the high pressure hose and return hose. You may want to drain reservoir first. The box is attached to the frame with three bolts. Remove the bolts and remove the box with the pitman at attached. Don't forget to transfer it over to new steering box noticing its position. Also make sure replacement steering box is centered prior to intallation.
