Question about Mazda B-Series

3 Answers

I have a 1993 series B2600i pickup. The problem is that it will not hold idle speed on a cold start. Trying to rev it up to keep it from dying does not help. Even after the idle holds, it will not accept fuel needed to increase speed for the first 3 or 4 minutes. So 20 MPH is about max speed during that period. I had the fuel filter changed. Then I had spark plugs and wiring changed, both to no avail. There are no mazda dealers in my area (zip code 28739). Any help would be appreciated. Ed

My mechanic said the IAC is clean. He replaced the cool temperature sensor to no avail. On a cold start the pickup floods and back fires. With a warm engine, it starts fine and runs very smooth.

Did you get my second posting on this problem? In case you didn't!

It said "the IAC was clean. The cool temp. sensor was replaced to no avail.

The engine seems to be flooding on a cold start, back firing 5 to 10 times when it finally starts.

My mechanic said the truck computer is working. He tested 3 items and the correct codes came up."

You suggested the 02 sensor or maf (?) sensor or egr(?) valve. Does my posting help any?

Please consider replacing your fuel pump which is located in the fuel tank beneath the back seat.

Good luck.

Could be an 02 sensor, the maf sensor, egr valve,I would take it to a reliable shop and have them put it on the shops computer, you can spend yourself crazy till you find the offending component, it may cost $80-$100 to computer check it, but by the time you chase all the possible components this will be the cheapest route, after they diagnosis the problem, you can do your own parts replacement if you want

Hi
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
However here is a link which you can search out for more information about your problem..

Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner and spray about half the can through the throttle horn while you hold the idle up to keep it from dying, this will clean the idle speed control valve and should cure the problem

1993 Chevy C1500 4.3L V6 TBI starts but dies at idle after warming up.

Low pressure from fuel pump, when the pump is cold the pressure increases, as it warms up the pressure drops (this happens in a pump that is going out) the normal pressure should be at 40 with the key on and engine not running, when started the pressure should stay around 36, any less it won't idle and may run as long as you hold the pedal down. The injectors are opened electronicaly, so as long as there is fuel flow the engine gets fuel to run.So check the fuel pump, soundslike you need a new one

93 chevy suburban v-8 tbi hard to start, but starts, will run but will not idle, can keep it running or driving as long as you rev engine constantly. Holding engine at half throttle it will slow and die. ...

Assuming your engine is in good mechanical condition, there are only a few options.

1. You may have a vacuum leak.
2. The pickup in the distributor may be worn to the point that it is sloppy at idle but normal at higher rpm.
3. Idle control valve/motor may not be working properly.

It probably isn't an ignition related problem as the problem would normally get worse as RPM increases. I've seen #2 about 5 times in the past year or 2 so it's not uncommon and would recommend replacing the entire distributor if you come to that conclusion, but would definitely check all vacuum hoses first.
