    cooling for engine

  • Hal Hallman May 11, 2010

When you say cooling system, that refers to the cooling system for the engine...is that your intent or do you mean the A/C system?

There is no need to bleed air out of the system as the Northstar is self purging.

If you are having overheating problems the most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank(Not the cap!),this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.

Air locks in the Northstar engine shouldn't be a problem as the system is self purging, given that all hoses are clear.

I thought you ment the a.c. for the coolant on some models there is a screw on top of the thermostat housing for bleeding. if not take the cap off start the car let it run working out the bubbles and keep adding coolant

SOURCE: how do you bleed air pockets out of cooling system in 99 grand am

If a valve is expose on the upper heater hose piping crack that open only when the engine is warmed up for at least 15 minutes. If no valve is seen you will need to loosen one of the heater hose clamps ever so slowly to let the air out. The process to loosen the clamp is not recommended unless you do this first..... When the engine is COLD loosen a hose clamp and remove the hose and put it back on. Thighten the hose clamp snug only. The start the engine to warm up. In about three minutes see if you can twist the hose to move on the fitting. If you can snug the clamo a lttle more and check again. You do not want the hose to come off if too loose. Now that the engine is warmed up for 10 to 15 minutes shut OFF the engine and barely loosen the same clamp 1/4 turn at a time until coolant trickles out. Listen carefully for air escaping too. Air pressure does built up only when the engine gets hot and the air pocket does not move when the engine was cold with the hose removed beforehand. If no air was released upon this proceedure you have a blockage in your system and flushing maybe the only other option using pressure instead forcing the coolant out. Get a can of coolant flush before the power flush proceedure. A radiator pressure tester can be used to power flush with an air fitting adapter installed in place of the guage

Bleed cooling system

Remove the coolant reservoir cap. fill it 3/4 full. start the car. You will have to run it to operating temperature. When the thermostat opens up, the coolant from the reservoir will start to drop. add more, but only to the hot mark. Reving up the engine will push out air in the system. Once the air is out (you will now as the heater will blower a constant hot air) Check the coolant level again. Fill as necessary.

How do u bleed air pockets out of a 1997 Cadillac Deville?

Just keep the reservoir filled to the right line and the cooling system should take care of the air bubbles after a while, provided that the radiator cap is sealed for both pressure AND vacuum.

Temp got up to 230 on my 99 cadillac deville is that normal

Make sure your engine is breathing properly, by regularly changing air filters. Flush your cooling system once each year and pressure test. There are cooling lines that cross over the rear of the engine that get corroded and may begin to weep antifreeze..you can view these lines by removing the engine cover....if you've had a consistent odor of antifreeze after running, with no drippage evident, this area is probably the culprit.....love my 99...

Hello
Did you bleed the air from the cooling system? this must be done or air pockets will cause overheating, here is the generic method to do the bleeding. This was written by me and works on every car.

The generic method of bleeding air from the cooling system is to use a floor jack and raise the front of the car as high as poss, then fill the coolant recovery tank full and run the engine until it just starts to overheat, high end of normal zone on gauge, then shut the engine down and run cold water over the radiator core, this will self bleed the system and the coolant will be pulled from the recovery tank, repeat as necessary, never let the recovery tank run dry or more air will be pulled into the cooling systeml , if it still overheats then you need to have the head gaskets checked with a gas analyzer for hydrocarbons present in the radiator or recovery tank

Is it normal for 1997 cadillac deville to stay at 220-226 temp.

No,it is not,the temp should stay about 200 to 212,if the cooling fans are staying on,and not going off, then the cooling system has a problem, change the thermostat, and bleed the air from the cooling system.if this does not help, change the coolant sensor out with a new one.
