Hi, it sounds like you need to replace your rotors. They are the round disks that your brakes clamp onto. They are most likely warped. If I recall the montana sv6 has rotors on the front and back.

If the car is parked on a grade/hill, with the transmission in gear will prevent shifting (pressure from the wheels through your axle/driveshaft). Have one person rock the car back and forth with another person (with strong fingers!) sitting in the drivers seat with the foot over the brake (if you're on a hill). As the person rocks the car slightly back and forth, see if you can disengage the safety button and move to N or P. Obviously engage emergency brake after that!

2.7 s type brakes not working as they should they are ok when you start breaking but when you are down to about 10mph the pedal becomes very hard to push and the car trys to roll on ?

It is possible the problem is ABS related but could equally be a problem with the vacuum servo or brake booster or the "supply" of vacuum.

Certainly best practice would be to begin by ensuring the brakes at each wheel are in good order.

Test the brake servo by pressing the brake pedal vigorously several times while stationary with the engine off. The pedal should then feel higher than usual and rock-hard.
Apply the footbrake with a moderate force and start the engine without using the accelerator pedal, if possible. The brake pedal should be felt to pull itself down under your foot immediately the engine starts and stop pulling down in just two or three seconds, maybe just a second or two more if it is a diesel model.

Release the brake, allow the engine to idle for a few seconds longer and switch off. Listen carefully in the resulting silence for the sound of air leaking. This might have to be repeated several times in order to listen under the dash and in the engine compartment around the brake booster and vacuum lines. A short piece of garden hose used as a listening tube can be useful.

Once a servo has been charged with vacuum, in the absence of leaks, it should remain charged for a long time if the brake is not used - certainly hours but often months or even years is not unusual. Aplly a moderate pressure to the brake pedal and a shhhhh... sound should be heard that lasts about a second and then stops. Increase the pedal pressure and another shhhh sound and stop.

If all tests ok you can be reasonably confident the brake booster and vacuum lines are in order though it is still possible the vacuum supply is insufficient for sustained braking. A road test on a clear and safe downhill route will determine if this is so. Make a rapid series of brief brake applications at a constant speed of around 30mph and the braking effort and the feel of the pedal should remain consistent and if it does not it indicates restricted supply pipes or hoses, poor engine tune, incorrect idle speed (petrol models) or a worn or inefficient vacuum pump if it is a diesel.

Engine cuts out, steering locks on braking - scary! Help!

What is possibly happening is when you brake, there is a vacuum leak caused by the power brake system, this reduces the engine rpm, which in turn effects the power steering which makes it feel like the steering is locking up. This can also happen with a vacuum leak anywhere in the engine or things like a faulty idle adjustment control.... Turn the vehicle on, place your foot on the brake, if the idle speed increases dramatically you have a problem. Then put the vehiclein drive with your foot on the brake. If it nearly dies, again, you have an issue.
There are many different things on an engine that can create vacuum leaks. EGR Valves, IAC solenoid, PCV valves, the list goes on....
Good luck finding this particular issue!

Stuck in Park, rocked it a little still stuck.

first off need to make sure vehicle is started (or at least key in on position) and foot on brake....make sure battery is fully charged as well.

I have a 1995 saab 900s convertible i know my back breaks need to replaced but my emergency brake might be bad, my car drifts back even in park i have to put a rock behind it you think getting back breaks...

hand brakes generally use back brakes (why their good for drifts) and normal foot brake use the front so yes i would definitely get them changed.

Why does my volvo rock when stopped at lights, sounds like it's going to cut off?

Probably a bad spark plug (wire, rotor, cap) causing the engine to misfire. Roll down the window and see what you hear. Pop the hood (when parked) and see if the whole engine is jumping from side to side.

Plugs, wires,check for vacume leaks. you might check your motor mounts by putting vehicle in forward and reverse with foot on the brake while giving it a little gas

you are correct it is the brakes... you could have a rock in them but if its been going on for a long while that is doubtful i suggest getting your brakes checked soon as possible if your brakes are wore down that bad it can actually fall out and cause you to be stranded and also ruin your rotors if they havent already

With the wheel off, give it good hit between the studs, like you were trying to put it on. Hit one side then the other, the drum will start to rock a bit, then pop off. You may want to put the wheel nuts back on as to avoid hitting the studs. Installing the brake shoes is not that simple, best you do one shoe at a time.If you look close there should be 2 different shoes for each side. Back off the adjuster to get the drum back on, this may take a few trys. Also check the brake drum , it may have a wear ridge that will need to be ground off. Hope this helps! Frankster016
