SOURCE: TOYOTA CELICA 2000 ACCELERATES SLOWLY

it might be your fuel injectors. The fuel injectors have been recalled. My 2000 gts was hesitating and i had the injectors cleaned and that fixed the problem. A month later i took it in for service and was advised that there was a recall on the fuel injectors.

SOURCE: fuel pump for 2000 toyota celica

Yes, remove the rear seat cusion and then lift up the padding. Take the screws out of the cover and them you can access the top of the fuel tank and remove the pump and fuel level sending unit.
Very easy!

SOURCE: jerky accelerating, late response to gas being pressed

Well for one, make sure you speed up slowly, dont HIT the accelerator. It may also be problems with your fuel filter. After you are stoped fuel stops running through the fuel pump/filter and then when you start going its starts to run through again and it cant keep up so it gets bubbles in it and doesnt move throught the filter easily hence the jerky accelerating. Good Luck

locate the mass air flow sensor. it's located inline with the air intake. it should be right after the air filter. disconnect the plug and see if the car runs better. also, when tapping on it lightly on the sensor with a screwdiver handle and the engine skips, could also indicate a bad sensor. these sensors will not always set the check engine light. suspecting the fuel system is also a possibility

If I'm not mistaken this vehicle is equipped with a downshift cable. Make sure it is properly connected and is free of interference. Should be connected at the carburetor near the accelerator cable. Make sure it is actuated when the accelerator is pressed. You may also want to make sure if you have a vacuum line running to the tail end of the transmission that it is free of water from your steam cleaning.

This a problem with a vacuum hoses leak. Need to find the leaking hose due to cracking and joint rubbers degrading. Need to have  a Mitty vacuum gauge to check these plastic hoses one by one to replace bad ones or replace all of them. If you don't feel comfortable to do thi,s have a shop find a vacuum leak for you.
