4 wheel drive will not engage - how do I troubleshoot

Trying to figure out why my 4 wheel drive will not engage on a 1989 Chevy S10 Blazer with 4.3L TBI engine and 700R4 automatic transmission. When I put the truck in 4 high or 4 low nothing happens. The 4 wheel lights don't come on the floor panel and the transfer case does not engage. What should I do first to troubleshoot this problem. I've taken the battery box out and observed the vacuum actuator. Nothing happens when 4 wheel is engaged. I can move the actuator freely with my hand and I can hear a click where the cable goes into the transmission but still nothing engages. I getting ready to check the vacuum actuator switch on the crankcase to see if it is defective. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The vacuum switch on the transfercase is most likely the problem. If you remove it and the plunger is stuck in, replace it and your 4wd should engage again.

The modulator at the transfer case probably stuck and may need service or replacement use a rubber mallet and hit actuator where it bolts to case careful dont hit connector and try if moves than remove and lube actuator shaft if dont move than remove and check shaft for bent or damage a lube shaft with out try to shift to 4hi if actuator activates and shaft does not move most likely replace but have part checked by auto store first

Problems with chevy s10

have the actuator (mounted on the drivers side transfer case) checked. that is what makes the selection from 2-4 hi-4 low. it takes the place of a gear shift. they are a fairly inexpensive and easy repair (if thats the problem). i would start there providing you have checked the fuses and relays. i hope this helps.

Make sure that the vacuum hose connector is connected AND connected correctly at the transfer case and at the front differential. If that is all right and the front differential still doesn't engage, then you need to test the vacuum actuator at the front differential.

2000 chevy blazer passenger front wheel noise

driving in 4wd on hard surfaces produces what is known as torque wind up as the wheels cannot slip so the variations of distance going around corners , dips in the road etc place considerable strain on the transmission , transfer case , drive lines and diffs
that is why it is difficult to get out of 4wd unless you drive with 2 wheels on a grass verge to relieve that torque wind up
as for the noise check wheel bearings and the cv ("U") joint at that wheel as there appears a proble where the dog teeth in the hub are not engaging properly or are jumping out of engagement

2000 blazer 4 wheel drive problem

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.
