Question about 2001 Ford Focus

I have a 2001 Ford Focus, Manual, 118k that has chugging problems

I have a 2001 Ford Focus, Manual, 118k.
Started "chugging" about a month ago and when the chugging starts the "door open" light comes on.
I've replaced the plugs & wires and fuel filter. Chugging improved a little after the fuel filter eplacement but the problem isn't fixed entirely.
If I rev a bit higher before shifting to the next gear it's better and also if I baby the gas. If I punch the gas it chugs to the point of almost dying.
I would LOVE some advice as I'm planning to take my little girl to the beach in a week and it's a 3 hour drive.
Would like it running dependably before that :)
Thanks,
Julie

Sounds like the egr solenoid stuck..Not the valve..When you are sitting at idle,,you should be able to take off the vacum line and there should be no vacuum..,If there is back track that line and see if it goes to a solenoid..I bet the vacuum lines are crossed..One should have vacuum,,the other should go to the egr valve..If they are crossed on the egr solenoid,,then you end up with constant vacuum going to your egr valve..Until you figure it out leave the line off the egr valve and block the line..If you are constantly haveing the valve held open,,you killing sparkplugs and the catylitic converter

Ford focus 1.6 zitec petrol, engine warning light flashing, engine chugging, very high fuel consumption, fumes smell when stationary, exhaust seems ok, recently change speed sensor and coil pack?

try the air filter first and the intake.the spark plugs then and after all go to a garage for checking compression timing and the head gasket.

Where is the radiator cap located on the 2001 focus?

A 2001 Ford Focus does not have an outlet on the radiator for a cap. It has a de-gas type cooling system and what would traditionally be called a "radiator cap" has become the de-gas bottle cap. It is located on the de-gas bottle just in front of the passenger strut tower and behind the passenger headlamp assembly. Do not open this cap when the engine is hot as you may be burned by the coolant.

Replace the ignition tumbler is the best way to repair your problem. You could try spraying a lubricant such as wd40 in the hole and try and lube up the pins inside. Good luck.
