Question about 2001 GMC Jimmy

2001 Jimmy, kills when accelerating

My 2001 GMC Jimmy is doing this. Not all the time. Only after it has been running for longer then 20 minutes.

The first thing I started to notice was that I would be driving and trying to accelerate and it would seem like it wasn't getting gas and the RPM's would actually fall. I would floor it, and it would pick up and go.

Now what is happening is it is runing fine on short distances. Once I've been going for 20 minutes or so when I slow to a stop it's idleing fine, I try to accelerate and it actually kills then. I was flooring it and I heard a noise like either a knock or click.

It usually restarts right back up. It doesn't do it at every stop. Yesterday it did it a bunch of times and I actually couldn't get it to go at a light. After sitting there for 2 minutes or so, It finally would start up.

What could this be? I'm going to take it in, but want to be educated first!

My 2001 jimmy has a slow and sluggish takeoff and acceleration speed. Wiring harness was melted apart from busted heater core hose.would a bad connection cause this problem.

Usually not. If it is shuddering while accelerating it's usually a plug wire. If you have a check engine light on then start there

2001 gmc jimmy problems

I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy, have had it for 2 years and has never given me any issues. However all the sudden the car began to shut off while at a red light, a stop sign, or anytime the car is not fully running. Even when it is fully running, at times it starts kind of pulling, and randoml accelerating on its own.

Have you checked base fuel pressure at the injectors ?
Base fuel pressure when cranking or at idle should be at least 60psi or more.

My 1997 Jimmy runs fine in idle when I take off the vechile is fine until it reaches 20 mph it won't accelerate and the rpms increase up to 3000 but no speed. What's wrong it's a 4 wheel d

Sounds like 2nd gear in the transmission is slipping. Cars usually shift at 15-20 mph from first to 2nd. First check the trans fluid.

Have you ran trouble codes yet? Most auto stores have a reader you can use now a days. Problem sounds like fuel overload at lower rpm and can be caused by bad throttle position sensor or mass air sensor.

I don't think you have anything wrong, I just don't think you have completed the correct drive cycle yet. Some vehicles must be driven in a very specific way before all the monitors will set. Here is the drive cycle that Gm Recommends:

  1. Cold Start. In order to be classified as a cold start the engine coolant temperature must be below 122°F (50°C) and within 11°F (6°C) of the ambient air temperature at startup.
Do not leave the key in prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.
  2. Idle. The engine must be run for two and a half minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. The more electrical load you can apply the better. This will test the O2 heater, Passive Air, Purge "No Flow", Misfire, and - if closed loop is achieved- Fuel Trim.
  3. Accelerate. Turn off the air conditioner and all the other loads and apply half throttle until 55mph (88km/hr) is reached. During this time the Misfire, Fuel Trim, and Purge Flow diagnostics will be performed.
  4. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for 3 minutes. During this time the O2 response, air Intrusive, EGR, Purge, Misfire, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  5. Decelerate. Let off the accelerator pedal. Do not shift, touch the brake or clutch. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 20 mph (32km/hr). During this time the EGR, Purge and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  6. Accelerate. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle until 55-60mph (88-96 km/hr). This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 3.
  7. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for five minutes. During this time, in addition to the diagnostics performed in step 4, the catalyst monitor diagnostics will be performed. If the catalyst is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst.
  8. Decelerate. This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 5. Again, don't press the clutch or brakes or shift gears.
