If you have a voltmeter check battery voltage with the engine running. Should be around 14.7. If it's only around 12 volts chances are the alternator is bad and needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: battery light comes on and
Hi. If this light comes on when your alternator is not making electricity and the car is running off of battery power alone. you'll either need to replace your alternator belt or the alternator, but before you do this, go ahead and check your battery connections. Sometimes cleaning the connections will fix a charging problem.
