every time I turn on my air conditioning a powerful stink is emitted from the vents. It's really bad now - it used to be just the first couple minutes, and now it's for a solid 10 minutes every time. It smells moldy.

Get the cores cleaned and be sure that the drain is clear and flowing.
One thing to do is turn off AC and still blow air through it, on high, for 2 or 3 minutes at shutdown. What you are trying to do is dry the evaporator of condensation. MUCH less smell on next power on of AC.
