It sounds like the mass airflow sensor if you have a check engine light then take it in to your local auto parts store to have them check it they should do that for free and they will tell you what's the issue and how to fix it.

There shouldn't be anything inside of the filter. When a fuel injected vehicle stalls out from lack of fuel, the fuel lines and rail need to have the air bled out of them. An easy way to do this is to put a vacuum pump on the fuel pressure regulator, use vacuum to hold it open, and then turn the key to "RUN" several times without starting the vehicle.
