I've done that, I know to apply the brake before shifting into gear, but something else is wrong. Can you point me in a different direction?

I change out a bad brake plunger switch, now my brake lights work, but my car will not go into gear. its like its lock into park, i step on the brake pedal but the car will not go into dive or any other gear.

Question about the brake interlock, CAN I jumper the brake interlock out of the system, and can you send me a drawing showing me where the brake interlock is located. Do you suggest I do this kind of work myself.

Hi,

Unfortunately, this Shifter getting stuck in park is a common problem on the Navigator. The brake interlock switch goes bad on the shifter and needs replacing.

Well its about 2 hours labor to remove most of the center console and to get to the switch. I am not sure on pricing for the interlock switch but I think its something like $100. So I would say you would be looking at about $300 to fix the problem.

Let me know, if need further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

The best i could do for you that i could provide you with a link :-

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-99-00-...

This is the link where you can purchase a repair manual less than 10 bucks. I might tell you the steps but i have no diagrams to help you and this is a bit tricky to change interlock switch. You can purchase the manual from the above mentioned source, Order the part from a local shop and fix the issue. You would save a lot of money.

Let me know, if need further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Are you putting your foot on the brake first? It is stuck in park until you unlock it by putting your foot first on the brake then moving the selector to a drive gear.

Hi i have a 2006 1.6 ford focus automatic, gear lever gets stuck. will not select from park to drive.have to put screw driver in access next to gear lever. to shift gear lever from park to drive positi

it could be that the ignition lock and/0r the brake pedal sensor that unlock (allows you to move the shifter) are/is not working correctly or has failed. You will have to check both those elements as well as the cable beneath the consul covering and the solenoid that pulls the cable.

My 94ford ranger is stuck in gear. is there any way to pull it out or do i have to pull transmission

Um, what kind of transmission? Standard or automatic? What gear?
Generally if it's an automatic and stuck in drive or reverse it's probably a linkage issue ...something's out of adjustment and you'll need to get under the truck to sort it out. If it is stuck in Park, then try rocking it backward or forward while some tries to move it out of park ...sometimes the parking awl gets hung up when the vehicle rolls a bit after you put it in park.
If you have a standard tranny then there is something amiss internally. Modern standard floor shift trannies do not have any external linkages to go out of adjustment. You might try rocking the vehicle back and forth while someone tries to move the shifter to neutral. But if it's jammed chances are it is something internal that's failed.

Chevy silverado gear shift want park

your shifting pattern seams off , as follows P R N D D1 D2,
Will it go into any gears closer to park ? did you try turning steering wheel , next I would look under at tranny linkage to see if there is something stopping it. that will require 2 people 1 in truck and 1 underneath.

I was backing up in a driveway one cold night, and as i tried to shift into drive it stuck on drive 3. I tried to move it back and it just wouldn't budge. I pulled infront of my boyfriends house and tried...

You may be able to stop and start the car in neutral using the parking brake. I'm not sure on the 2004. I would check the linkage and linkage cable first. It may be a much easier fix than you think. What gear does the indicator show you and is the shifter on the floor or on the column? I would still try to have someone go under the car and see if they can move the linkage manually to park.

I have a jaguar xj8 and the gear got stuck in park ,and I can't put it in reverse or drive. How can I fix this problem

Most likely the lock out switch at the brake pedal is at fault, because in order to put it in in to any gear you have to step on the brake first ! Their is a switch located which prevents you put it in gear with out stepping on the brake pedal, so check this switch first.

1999 Volvo S80 stuck in park

see my friend easy fix,the problem you are having is a wire problem that locks or unlocks the shifter from the park potition and also unlocks the key from the ignition switch is just getting stuck inside the ignition switch, so more likely needs lubrication you can do it yourself or have a machanic do it
for you, maybe replace it with a new one( wich i dont think is nesesary) take it out clean it, put new grease and it should be good to go, good luck. This wire is conected to the ignition switch, on the right side and can be pulled out with your hand.

Stuck in Park

Put your foot on the brake before you attempt to put it in gear. if that does not work the sensor that stops you from putting it in gear without using the brake has failed... check fuses first.
