My 2000 toyota camry's back lights are off when I drive but work when I hit the brakes. What should I check?

If the backup lights come on when you hit the brake pedal, chances are one of the tail lamp housings is shorting out. Or the wiring harness going to the rear of the car. The reverse lamp and brake light circuits are different, even different fuses.

Check your brake fluid if low have your brakes checked. The brake ligh on the dash stays on if fluid is low or if there is a pressure differential (leak).

Brake window light assembly just clicks off rear dash. IMPORTANT>Replace bulb from Toyota dealer or else brakelight warning light in dash will come on. Something to do with the proper ohms.

Your brakes warning light or your actual brake lights? If it is your warning light that can come Monday if you're park break is on or slightly on or the switch that says that it is on is faulty, in which case it may tell your cruise control to turn off. If your brake lights stay on there's something pul to you about your switch by the pedal as your cruise will not work when you hit the bricks and this will be perceived as you hitting the brakes. A break warning light will also, come on if your brake fluid is low.

Check and make sure all the brake light bulbs have the correct bulb in them. Even if they work, if the incorrect bulb is installed it could put the indicator on.

There is no "reset" for the rear lamp failure system. The light goes out automatically wehen all of the rear lamps (brake and tail) are working. Did you check the brake light in the lower part of the back window? Also note that the lamp sensor is very sensitive; it needs to see all the bulbs to be the same wattage. The wattages can vary from nfgr to mfgr. Let me know waht you find on the 3rd brake lamp in the back window.

The light is blinking because the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservioir is low. Add an ounce of fluid and the light will go out.

The rear brakes also are in need of adjustment.

you most likely have a short somewhere. some vehicles were designed with radio controls on the back of the steering wheel im not sure when they started doing it but thats all i can think of for the radio
