Question about 2005 Nissan Frontier
That sensor is part of the fuel level sending unit. its what communictes with the little gauge on the dashboard to show u how much fuel is left in the tank. leaving it un corrected can lead to incorrect fuel level indications and u could run out of fuel even tho the gauge says u have half a tank or anything like that. Yes, u need to drain the fuel tank to be able to safely remove it from the vehicle unless u take it in with a very very low amount of fuel in it.

yes it could very well be a O2 sensor and the quickest way is to test with a multi meter ,their are 2 sensors on each bank ,now each sensor has four wires and two of the wires are the same colour ,so check these two wires for 12v supply coming to them ,then the other tow should show a varying current as engine ides and is revved a little ,
