Brute force using a big hammer. You could try soaking it with penetrating oil overnight, that could help some but basically only brute force will get it off...

How to change a front wheel stud on a 2001 nissan xterra front 4 wd hub


None of those answers are correct, as they obviously have never worked on an Xterra. As an Xterra owner myself, and automotive TECHNICIAN... You need to remove the rotor/hub assembly. To do this, you will need a 6mm allen head to take out the 6 bolts holding your hub onto the assembly. Once this is off, you will have to remove a snap ring from around the CV axle input splines. Once that is off you will be able to remove the bearing assembly inside. Take a 14mm socket, and remove the 6 bolts holding the hub onto the rotor. You will also need to remove the caliper from the rotor, and hang it with a piece of wire up and out of the way, being sure not to let it hang free or drop. With the caliper off, and all the bolts out you should be able to remove the rotor/hub assembly from the CV splines. Then you can seperate the hub from the rotor, which will probably be rusted on (Cushion the face of the rotor on a towel, and being sure not to hit the rotor, hit the flat surface of the hub with a hammer which will break loose the rust). Tap the top of the old studs out thru the back of the hub...then tap the back of the new studs in. They need to be able not to slide in and out of the bore, but don't necessarily have to be flush with the hub. Once you get everything back together and tighten the lugs on, it will pull the studs the rest of the way thru the hub and seat them properly.

Hopefully this helps...There is no need to take it to a machine shop or do ANY kind of pressing in or out. There is NO giant hub nut and cotter pin to remove.

Is there any difference between replacing front breaks/ rotors in an 87 cougar and any other car? Autozone tells me the wheel bearing and hub assembly are all part of the rotor. Is this true? Is it any...


This the old fashioned rotor. The hub is part of the rotor and there will be an inner and outer bearing. In order to replace the rotor the old bearings will need to be removed from the old rotor, cleaned, inspected, repacked, and then reinstalled in the new rotor along with a new grease seal.

Most newer vehicles have whats called a knock off rotor. This type of rotor simply slips off from the hub assembly once the brake caliper is removed.

Are you talking about the front rotors? The hub and rotor are one assembly and do not seperate on that truck. If you need to replace one part, the replacement part will have the hub and rotor together.

When buying rotors for a 95 Bronco 4X4 should the rotors be seperate from the hub or should they be attached as one piece? Im getting mixed info from part stores.


The reason you're getting mixed info from parts stores is because it comes both ways.
Look at the following to determine which one you have, 4 wheel disc brakes (floating front rotors) or rear drum brake model (except 4 wheel disc brakes):

  1. Jack up the front of the truck and support it with jackstands. Remove the front wheel.
  2. Remove the caliper assembly and support it on the frame with a piece of wire (or something equally secure) without disconnecting the brake fluid hose.
  3. Remove the hub and rotor assembly.
  4. Install the rotor in the reverse order of removal, and adjust the wheel bearing as outlined in Section 1.
F-Super Duty with 4-Wheel Disc Brakes The hub and rotor are individual pieces, allowing the rotor to be replaced independently. The front and rear rotors are the same and are attached with 10 bolts and washers. The bolts are tightened a little at a time, in a crisscross fashion, to an ultimate torque of 74–89 ft. lbs. Im trying to replace the rotors and im having a Hard time getting it off. HELP


You might want to spray some WD-40 around the center of the rotor and the wheel lugs. Usually on Honda's, the rotors will have 2 threaded holes to put in bolts. Screw in each bolt equally to help push the rotor away from the hub.

you have to knock out all the wheel studs first. these are pressed in, just hammer them out then you can hammer the rotor off by placing hub and rotor, outer side up on flat surface. this will probably destroy the rotor but im assuming you are replacing them anyway

remove the center cap dissasemble the locker assembly their is a nut down in the collar the hub and rotor assembly comes off as one peice them knock out the studs to seperate the rotor from hub
