Question about Honda Accord

1 Answer

1992 Honda Accord we are trying to fix for son. Been sitting 6 years. Tries to start but won't turn over. Have replaced main relay. Will run a few seconds if we spray starting fluid in intake. Also changed fuel filter. Gas gauge not showing any fuel even though we put in 5 gal. fresh gas. After trying to crank we loosened fuel line and does not seem to be any fuel going to injecters. Can't hear fuel pump, but wondering if there is a fuse or separate relay for fuel pump etc. before we tackle fuel pump replacement.

Hi

There are quite a few potential causes of this in a car that has been sitting up for 6 years. These can range from a problem with the cars ignition switch to a bad coil (faulty coil will cause fuel pump not to operate on some Hondas) , fuel pump cut off relay or the fuel pump itself.

You are right to troubleshoot this a bit further before jumping to a conclusion. Rather than me getting into an exhaustive list of possibilities I am including this excellent link which is a very comprehensive troubleshoot of non starting in the Honda of this era including diagrams and photos. See link; http://techauto.tripod.com/

Please do navigate the tabs for a thorough explanation of the potential issues.

It is highly likely that the non start problem in this car is electrical in nature through years of sitting up. Also fuel gauges and the like often have a habit of magically beginning to work again after a few days on the road which is a definite bonus!

I sincerely hope this information helps you to pin down the issue. As I say the information is very comprehensive and covers all possibilities you are likely to encounter.

Please do let me know how you get on and remember to rate my answer if this has helped.

Thanks for using FixYa.

My 1992 Honda accord just stop running at a stop light and now it won't start, Why?

I had the same problem and couldn't figure it out. Changed all the same components you did. Finally broke down and bought a distributor. Soon as i put it in, it started right up and has been running since. Main fuel relay could cause it to. i re-soldered mine.

You should try replacing the fuel pump main relay, all the symptoms you are explaining point to the relay. I just went through the same problem with my 90 accord, replacing the main relay make it start perfectly every time.

Replace the pgmfi relay (main relay), it's up under the drivers side dash and has "mitsuba" written on the side. They were a common problem, relatively cheap and really just maintenance after this long. If that doesn't solve your problem, you'll need a new distributor.
