How do I remove the shifter from the transmission on a 1991 ford f150 4.9 liter, manual transmission

josh zehnie, The first thing you have to do is pull the carpet away from the shifter boot. You will see a screw on each corner of the boot that have to be removed. Lift the shifter boot and the gasket under it straight up as far as possible. You will now see the top of the transmission where the shifter connects. Again you will four bolts holding the plate that the shifter goes through. Remove these bolts, which are usually allen key type heads, and gently pull the shifter straight up being careful that you don't drop the plastic bushings into the transmission that are on each side of the bottom of the shifter. Reassembly is just as easy. Just be careful that you get the bushings back in place. Test the shifter before you replace the upper boot. Good luck with this.

How do i remove the gear knob - 1997 porsche boxster manual

Use a flat bladed screwdriver or you hands to lift the bottom of the boot away from the console. It has small clips that hold it down on the console. They just pop out. Once the boot is free all around and if you have the standard shifter, you can then pull the shifter off. The amount of force may vary depending on your car. Some have found it very easy to remove, other have found it more difficult. If it is difficult to remove, sit in the passengers seat, put the shifter in reverse and using the floor for leverage, pull on the shifter while pressing into the floor with your feet. I should come off. If not, try applying some heat to the neck of the shifter just below the knob, being careful not to damage the leather, and try again. If you have a shifter other than the base shifter, you will need to use a T30 Torx screwdriver to loosen a screw under the boot in the front of the shaft of the shifter just below the knob.

My Toyota pickup jumps out of gears a lot

You will have to remove the boot from your shifter and then remove teh bolts that hold the shifter in place. when you remove the shifter you will see in the transmission a white plastic piece. this piece wears as time goes by with toyotas and allows the shifter to pop out. Luckily for you its an inexpensive piece and an easy repair.

Gear shift will not come off of transmission

You should be able to take the trim screws around the shifter boot off and raise the boot. There are a few bolts on top of the tranny to remove and the shifter will come off. That is the only way to remove the shifter, it bolts into the top to make sure you can't just **** up on the shifter and pop it out of the shift forks.

It has its mmoments on time it will go in every gear fine the next it wont any ideas

Not knowing your exact problem I can try to answer from what I know. If it is 5 on the floor , it could be the cotter pin on your shifter broke and this makes the shifter shift freely and not really engaging the gears. You can take the shifter boot off and inspect it. If the pin is broke you can easily lift up the shifter but do not do this unless you have a visual on the area. At all times you want to know where everything is located before it is torn apart. Take pictures if you do the work yourself cause half the times it takes a couple of trips the auto store to get the right parts. Hope it helps, again I don't know what the exact symptoms are.

Shifter very loose wont stuck in gear i left it in (sunfire)

see if there is a shear pin that goes thrrough the connection. A shear pi is used to prevent evxcessive forcing and is supposed to break under conditions you described.. It is easily replaced with a new oin and light hammer. Good luck.

Shifter knob??

yes I can. Lift the bottom boot area (the plastic trim) from the front first. Lift the boot up over the knob. The knob is attached with a clip that you have to cut. Once that's removed the boot and knob come off as an assembly.
