I cant get the cap off of my gas tank to take the fuel pump out, how do I get the fuel pump out?

Relieve the fuel pressure at the pump switch located in the passenger compartment under the carpet of the transmission hump on the passenger side. Remove the fuel tank. Turn the lock ring counterclockwise until it's loose and remove the lock ring. Pull the fuel pump/sending unit from the tank being careful not to bend the arm for the sending unit float. Discard the old lock ring seal. Installation is reverse of removal with the following additions: (a)Apply a coat of heavy grease to the new lock ring seal to hold it in place during assembly. Install the seal in the lock ring groove. (b)Install the fuel sender/pump unit into the fuel tank so that the tabs of the unit are positioned into the slots in the fuel tank. Make sure to keep the seal in place during installation until the lock ring has been tightened properly. (c)Hold the fuel sender/pump unit in place, install and tighten the locking ring clockwise until the stop is against the retainer ring tab. - Mazda Pickups Repair Manual

To install:
  1. Inspect the fuel pump hose and bottom sound insulator for signs of deterioration, then replace, as necessary.
  2. Push the fuel pump onto the sending tube.
  3. Using a new sending unit-to-fuel tank O-ring, carefully lower the sending unit/fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank.
When installing the sending unit, be careful not to fold or twist the fuel strainer or it may restrict the fuel flow.
  1. Secure the sending unit by turning or driving the lockring clockwise and into position under the tabs.
  2. Install the fuel tank assembly to the vehicle.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper pump operation.

Yes the tank must be removed

Fuel Pump: Service and Repair

system component.
FUEL PUMP REMOVAL
1. Release fuel system pressure.
2. Fuel tank must be removed prior to fuel pump service.
3. Using a hammer and a brass drift, carefully tap the fuel pump lock-ring counter-clockwise to release the fuel pump.
4. Remove the fuel pump and its O-ring from the fuel tank, and discard the old O-ring.
5. Cover tank openings to prevent dirt from entering system.
FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT REMOVAL
1. Gently bend the sending unit locking tabs away from the sending unit.
2. Remove the electrical connector cover (red). Remove the sending unit wires from the electrical connector.

5. Pull the wires through the reservoir body and fuel pump cover plate.
FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT INSTALLATION

Drop the gas tank, making sure to support it so it doesn't simply fall out of the straps.

There is a ring with ears on top of the tank, in the middle of the ring is the fuel pump.
Use a small brush or a can of compressed air to blow as much gunk away from the fuel pump area as possible. The number one reason for a fuel pump to fail is gunk in the gas tank.

Disconnect the hoses, they will usually need a squeeze, and a tiny bit of back and forth twisting to pull them off. Disconnect the wiring from the tank.

You will need to carefully tap the ring loose using the ears, going counter clockwise. I always use a short piece of two by four board and a large flathead plastic handled screwdriver. (It is a really good idea to avoid sparks!)

You will need to pull up, then push forward, pull up a little more, and then twist the whole pump assembly to one side to get it to come out.

Putting it in is pretty much the same thing in reverse, be careful not to bend the long thin metal stem with the float on the end, that's the gas guage sensor, bend it too much and you'll have an inaccurate gas guage. When you tap the locking ring clockwise to tighten it, make sure the ears are tight against the stops.

It's a lot harder to get the tank back up into place enough that you can get the straps started. A couple of small floor jacks can help, a second person helps even more.

Fixing a fuel pump on a 1997 oldsmobile aurora

The good news first!!
No need to drop fuel tank!!
Lift carpet from trunk ... just in front & a little to the right of spare wheel well is an access cover. When screws and cover are removed you have complete access to top of tank with pump and sender assembly mounted below a twist off clamp ring. When replacing Delphi fuel pump unit make sure you also replace gasket.
The bad news!!!
New pump unit over $300!!! ... try junk yards.
