First symptom that a PCM or computer is bad is when before start up the check engine light does not light up. The check engine should light up before the engine starts or when there is a problem. Another is when if you attach a scanner it does not get any power or signal from the unit. If these does happen check first the wires for bad connections or exposed wires. If you have a friend with the same car swap your PCM with his and see if his car runs. If it does not then the problem is the PCM. This is the sure way of identifying.

How to know if i have a bad pcm?

That's not easy. Even shops cannot tell for certain after extensive tests. Often it comes down to exploring all other options first before suspecting the pcm. Repair manuals may say, try a new pcm to see if problem is solved.

What is a pcm sincerand how do i know if it bad

There isn't a PCM sensor. But there are many sensors connected to the PCM. Have to know which one to tell you how it can be tested.

My malfunction indicator light just came on this morning. What do I need to check in order to repair it myself ?

Most auto parts store will read the OBDII code from the cars computer using a scan tool. This service is usually complementary when they are not busy.

Auto zone has a way of reading the code from the scan tool with their computer and provide you a print out of the most likely causes. Of course they will want to cell you the part.

In many cases the problem will correct itself and was caused by an exceptional sequence tripping the error code.

I have a 2007 suzuki forenza sedan and my speed odmiter is not cause but i cant find the speed sensor

what is failing, the Odometer? is it stuck or what? do tell (blank>?)
the trip or total ? odometer?
are both dead.
did you scan the PCM for DTC errors>> if not , FAIL you will

the PCM uses the tail shaft tranny speed sensor to calculate , speed, and odometer and trip and engine load computation. (and lots more)...ask..
if it fails the PCM will tell you its bad
why not scan it.
and stop guessing
uses a real scan tool , not some pos, $9 to 20 junk.

Speedometer quick qorking 2004 usuzu rodeo 3.5

did you connect any OBD2 scan tool and look.
the PCM will tell you if the VSS is dead. flat out tell you.
why no scan the PCM and not work blind./??
the tool is cheap to buy, rent or loan. (or any mech will just do it for free as good will. (no dealers here).

ok, Rodeo, 3.5 2004
3.5L is wrong, dead wrong, 3.2 is my guess.
see here, see country and engines, neither i can guess.
which engine ReALLY ?
Not the Rodeo SPORT , answers below are 3.2L non sport.

Speedo dead. what about Odometer.?????
is replace sensor a statement or a question?
replaced with a "d"
my guess it was a question. and guess.
step 1 and 2 all electrical problems.
1: test the fuses, related. Fuse #11?
2: battery fully charged, at 12.6vdc, not 10v, at 10 electronincs dont work right. fix battery. or charge system.

now how does the 04 work.?
the VSS sensor feed data to many things.
PCM (for fueling data)
supension control unit.
cruise control

if the odometer works its not the VSS.
the cluster is 100% electronic, ....

VSS is input to Speedo and the odometer is electronic inside
same, so if VSS is bad, both die.
if only the speedo is bad, then it is bad.

scan the PCM and not guess.
the PCM reports a bad VSS, with 100% assurance.

that is the PCM, you are scanning,,, you never said .
it means the perminante memory in the controller is scrambled.
is this a 2004 libertry or a 1995 GC?
the 2004 the trans brain is inside the PCM now.
so what is 12? that is olden days codes, not 2004....
tell the full story,, (symptoms) so i wipped out my OBD2 scan tool
jacked in to the PCM and ......???????
if you get checksome errors)
1: low battery voltage, parked key off is 12.6v, if not charging issues.
2: PCM bad, pull battery cable, minus, wait 5 min, then put back.
the memory can read corrupted for 3 reasons
1: low battery
2: memory is bad. (vast reasons inside)
3: PCM is bad.

How do check computer to see if it is bad

I've heard the wiring connector to the PCM isn't always as secure as it should be, wwhich can cause all kinds of problems. Try securing it more tightly into the PCM with zip-ties, or something easy of that nature. The PCM may not be bad, this is an easy and cheap attempt at fixing it.

Put on machine said camshalf postion sensor was bad replaced still won't fire

the machine wont tell you that the sensor is bad... it tells you its getting a bad reading from the sensor. which means it could a problem in the wiring from the cam sensor to the pcm, the pcm itself, or the syncro that the cam sensor sits on if there is one in the vehicle your working on. could be a problem with the cam itself also but very rare

My 04 dakota is not always charging the battery. The altinator tested fine.

Are you having any other issues? IIRC, the PCM tells the alternator what to do. What condition is the battery in? Have battery load tested, and possibly look to ee if PCM is bad.

BTW, PCM has an 8 year 80k warranty on it, so if you are under 80k dealer will replace it for free.
