Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan
Electronic dash guages, speedo, tach stopped working and abs light is on, door locks are also acting up. I was told it could the dash unit it self or it could be a body control moduale and you can't put a used one in, not only because of the milage but they are programed to each van.
I have the same problem with a 1997 Dodge Caravan. However I don't agree with solution 1 given. Your problem is different then the person in solution 1. His vehicle would not start when the problem occured....our problem is the guages and door lock only work when they are in the mood. They won't work and then suddenly as driving down the road the door locks lock and the guages come on and it may be fine for a week. There are 2 speed sensors on the front on of the tranny.....One speed sensor controls trans shifting and that one is ok or you van would not shift. I thinking you may to check other speed sensor......
The second solution has some merit check and fuses.....

I had the same issue with a 97 town & country. Gauges and instrument panel would go off and it would not start. These have a bad solder connection on the back plug-in on the back of the instrument cluster. I touched a hot solder iron to the solder points and everything has been fine since. It took me a long time of dealing with this before I came across this solution. Good Luck

I'd be looking for a fuse named 'Accessories' before replacing an expensive instrument panel.
The cheapest digital multimeter from Radio Shack or any auto parts store will let you check the fuses but if I am suffering a similar problem, I pull and reseat each fuse to make sure it isn't just a corroded contact. The fuses can be checked in place with the meter since they have tiny openings that allow you to probe the fuse element without removing it. They should read only a bit higher resistance on the lowest range than you see with the probes shorted to each other.
