Question about 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

Open Question

Attention hotchevy1965: more questions, answers please?

(3.3L) After help from last weekend, did replace with new fuel pump; started right up. Next day & subsequent days, after driving, would go to restart & would randonly start to fire-up, but wouldn't start. Waited after going on assumption of flooding and would restart. One time, felt fuel from carburator & was warm. That time engine got to about 200 degrees. Replaced thermostat & fan motor. Again started right up, but next day after short trip to school. Would not start again. Not flooded, Not warm. No fuel in carburtor this time. After reading manual & checking computer messages all weekend, still dumbfounded. Fuel pump pressurizes system, lots of spark, but will only fire with starter fluid. Is there a sensor that is not letting fuel go through to start it? And if so, where is the sensor. What does the trottle positioning sensor look like? What does the pressure regulator look like?

SOURCE: turns over, has spark fuel,if

Pressure loss may be at fuel lines or injectors (could be very minor to take all night to lose pressure). Would have thought pump, but you replaced it. Have you checked the fuel pressure? It would be interesting to see how long it would take to build up in a morning start.

Not starting up

I had a similar problem with an S-10 some time back, and I understand that the 88 C1500 has the same fuel pump setup. Two questions you must answer: First, did it run out of gas just before the problem started? Second, if you remove the air cleaner cover and pour just a little gas into the carb/throttle body, will the truck start and run until the gas is used up? If you answer 'yes' to the last, or to both questions, the problem may be in the electric fuel pump mounted in the gas tank. In my case, when my son was driving the truck, he would let the fuel level get really low before putting gas in the tank. Fine contaminant particles would build up on the fuel screen, and caused premature pump failure when some of the contaminant particles passed through a small hole in the screen and wrecked the pump impeller. Give it a look-see.

Fuel pump problem,no noise, pressure, starts only by hammering btm tank

hi you need to check the pump at its outlet before it goes to the filter make sure its working if so and theres no fuel pressure at the regulator then the fuel filters blocked if the pumps not pumping which i suspect because you said when you banged on the bottom of the tank it started for a second or two now you have had a pump previous so the question is is the pump gone again and if so whats caused a second pump to go answer is there is something in the tank something blocking the pumps i would suggest take the pump out and test it in some clean fuel and drain the tank and clean it out and also replace the fuel filter best of luck yates210456
