Problem for Mercury 1997 Mountaineer

I have a 1997 mountaineer. Original transfer case

I have a 1997 mountaineer. Original transfer case went out and replaced it with one from a 1998 mountaineer. Old one had speedo hole, newer one not. Any difference between the two on inside so that I can get my speedometer to work with least expense? Can I replace the rear half of case or is there something else needed to make it work?
