Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

My starter has went out in my 1991 Chevy Cavalier twice in the last few months. I don't see any damage to my flywheel (of course, I can't see it all), what would cause my starter to repeatedly go out? My air conditioning went out, (the compressor went bad) and I bypassed it, would that be adding additional stress to my starter?

It's doubtful that bypassing the a/c compressor could cause damage to the starter. Did you just use a a/c delete pulley? How are the starters failing? Are the teeth getting damaged or is it just not turning? What are you using as replacement starters? It's not very uncommon to have a remanufactured starter go bad in short order.

The starter problem is a tough definetly have a voltage drop in the circuit.this voltage drop can be found anywhere between the begining of your battery positive all the way through your starter and alternator cable.find the location of where the wire is damaged, fix it and only that will solve your problem.if not it will keep burning the compressor bypass should not affect your starter.

You need to look at the flywheel by turning the engine by hand and watching the gear teeth. Mark the spot you started at so you don't do more work than you need to. If the drive gear sounds normal when engaging and turning the engine, likely the flywheel is good. Make sure that the starter and engine have a good ground. (you can add an additional ground wire (10ga or larger) from the battery, right to it if need be) As long as the air conditioner clutch is turning freely, even if unused, it will not cause any strain on the starter or engine When not engaged, it's just another idler pulley. Even a rebuilt starter should carry at least a three month warranty make sure it's actually bad and you didn't mis- diagnose the problem to begin with. (it can happen).

Starter problems with my 91 chevy cavlier

There are shims that go between the starter and the block. If it grinds because it is too tight in the flywheel you need to add a shim.

I've had my ignition replaced and my starter twice in one month whats wrong

Your flywheel may be damaged. The starter drive engages the flywheel to spin the engine. A bad ring gear or cracked flywheel will make noises you described and is ******* starters. Rebuilt starters are not always good.

I have a 93 Cavalier and everytime I try and start it and makes a sound like your trying to start a car while it's already on. what is my problem?

Hi, this could be one of a few possibilities. You could have a loose, or improperly aligned starter, or an issue with the flywheel. Last, you could have just a faulty starter. If this has been happening for a while, I would certainly inspect the flywheel for cracks, or damaged teeth. If this is ok, then the starter, or alignment is at fault. Good luck...Coop

The starter has no cylinders. it is an electric motor powered from the battery and ignition system.
The chevy cavalier has a 4 cylinder engine though.
