It sounds as though your ICV is at fault. This is a idle compensation valve which is used to compensate for extra load put upon the engine while running an AC unit or a 4 wheel initiation.

2002 ford ranger - Where is the 4x4 actuator located

On the transfer case
Transfer Case - Electronic Shift
The four-wheel drive electronic shift-on-the-fly feature electrically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator through the mode select switch (MSS) on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two instrument cluster indicators: one for 4WD HIGH which appears as 4WD, and one for 4WD LOW, which appears as 4WD LOW. Shifts into 4WD HIGH can be made at any speed. When shifting into 4WD HIGH with the vehicle stationary, tooth blockage may occur preventing shift completion. When the vehicle is driven above 8 km/h (5 mph) the shift will complete. When shifting in or out of 4WD LOW, the four-wheel drive (4WD) control module requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal be applied, and the transmission be in NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal be depressed (manual transmission).
The gearmotor encoder assembly is mounted externally on the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case between the 4WD HIGH, 4WD LOW, and 2WD range positions.
The four-wheel drive (4WD) control module controls the gearmotor encoder assembly that shifts between 4WD HIGH, 4WD LOW, and 2WD modes.

My 2000 Chevy silverado 1500 z71 wont move. used 4wd then tried to put back into 2wd it would shift into any gear. Put back in park it makes a grinding noise

Sounds like your transfer case in neutral. You have to engage the transfer case back into gear then shift selector to drive or reverse. When your transfer is in neutral the transmission will not operate. Good luck.

I have a 1996 chevy blazer and dont know how to disengage from four wheel drive to two wheel drive?

As I recall the 96 blazer had electronic shifting for 2wd to 4wd. There should be a small panel on the drivers dash buttons for 2wd, 4wd lo and 4wd hi.

Simply press the desired button while stationary and if the system is functioning properly then it will shift and the light for the engaged type of drive will be lighted. Generally you would like to be in 2wd for this vehicle.

How do I use the shift on th fly 4wd system. I wanted to know basicalll what was the procedure. Do I put the tramission in a certain gear before I shitft the 4wd system or what?

If the system is a true shift on the fly you will be able to shift in 4WD while driving in forward gear, shifting in to 4WD high only. To shift in to 4WD low you should stop the truck and place it in to park or neutral. Also as you shift in to 4wd (or out of) try to do in a neutral state with the drive train, meaning not when you are accelerating or under heavy load. Make the shift when you are more or less cruising. PLease remember true 4WD should not be run on clear concrete or asphalt as the system must be allowed to slip. If you traveling on a snow covered road or such be certain to shift back to 2WD when on clear roads to avoid drive train damage.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4wd. Auto transfer case light issue

I have the same problem. It is intermittent and sometimes shows up with service transmission message. To get rid of it just put the truck in park, press the 2 high button and shift into drive while it is still flashing. I will worry about it more when it blows up. You can drive with the vehicle showing the solid neutral and it seems to make no difference. It has to be a wake up problem between the control modules. It only happens on start up.

Can't transfer to 4L or neutral mode

Transfer cases can be quirky. I've got a 91 Wrangler, an 86 Cherokee and a 75 Blazer. When I go from 2WD to 4WD, they each have their own personality.

There are a number of things I've learned to persuade a stubborn xfer case to shift.

Try mixing these :
  • Engine running, vehicle not moving
  • Engine off, Shift Xfer case, Restart
  • Tranny in neutral
  • Shift Xfer case 'N', Tranny in gear, Tranny in neutral, Xfer case to 4HI or 4LOW (as long as you feel it register), Tranny in gear, try to move
  • Shift Tranny to Reverse, roll a few yards
  • Lock/Unlock the Hubs
To get back to 2WD:
  • Drive for a few feet in a straight line
  • Unlock the hubs
  • Tranny Neutral
  • Shift xfer case
Let me know how it turns out.
