Question about 1998 Dodge Durango

2 Answers

Hello, my name is Kevin Jones and I own a 98 durango, 5.2 liter. For about a month now, my engine has been running like a cold start. What I mean is that When the vehicle first starts up, it sounds louder like some kind of air valve is open, but it will quite down within a minute usually. but now it sounds like that all the time, and my gas milage has went down and it sounds like its going to blow up when going up any hill. Do you know what this is? I had a mechanic look at it and they didnt know what it was. Thank you

Have your fan clutch checked. It is supposed to engage only when the engine temp requires it and not after. Yous may be staying engaged constantly and henceforth the loud sounding engine and poor fuel mileage. Thank you, Dana

Why my '99 Durango won't start? The battery is fine so far everthing is working but the radio?

Hi Sheila, i'm glad to help. 99 Durango's with thew 5.2 liter engine were good about the Crank Sensors going bad. Now, as I can't say that securily with out diagnosis. If it were my vehicle and knowing what I know about no starts, that is diffinently where I would start. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Sheila.

Dodge drango 2000 will not idle in cold weather until warmed-up

I would test, or replace my IAT sensor . (Intake air temperature sensor)
If it's defective, it will send wrong signal, thus wrong mixture for cold engine.

You'd have to replace the transmission as well if you want to run that particular engine. The 4.7L engine is a "mod" motor and the 5.9L is the good old cast iron V-8 design.

Black smoke is fuel. Water vapor can be from burning mid grade fuel with ethanol. The sludge is from adding tap water to the radiator.

2001 dodge durango, when the weather is real cold

have the ECT checked,
Engine coolant temperature, lets the computer know whether it should push more fuel thru for cold mornings ,
the sensor could be telling the computer that your engine temp is 75 degrees, means less fuel being pushed

Could be a bad catalytic converter. Have the exhaust back pressure checked. Check the fuel pressure & if possible, drive with the gauge on & see what happens when it dies. If the pressure is good, then it's not fuel. Write back if you have more issues.

1998 Dodge Durango 4X4 SLT, 82k miles: Electrical shot. Help.

The speed sensor on the rear differential is a common problem with these vehicles. That sensor would cause the speedo problem, the odometer problem, the abs light, no cruise control, but it would not cause it to die. The speed sensor is easy to change. I is stuck in the top of the differential housing with one bolt holding it in. You can change that yourself for about 35 bucks. The dying problems sounds like a cam or crank sensor. You say the transmission lags, is that mean it is slow to accell or it has a slide shift from 1 to 2 then bangs into 2nd?
