Question about 2004 Ford Focus
If you find the upper hose coming off the radiator and follow it back towards the engine block it will go into a plastic housing that is held to the engine by 3 10mm head screws. The thermostat is in that plastic housing.

If it's a 2004 Focus you have to remove the serpentine belt, the power steering pump, the radiator overflow tank, all the hoses that connect to the thermo, at both ends, you may as well replace those too. Also helps to remove the big pulley. Like almost everything else 2004 Focus it's god awful complex to do the silliest thing. I swear If I had a ceiling winch it would easier to just remove the whole engine.
