Have you scanned for any trouble codes?... do you get a 'CHECK ENGINE' light when this happens?Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code(s) which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE the problem and perhaps eventually fix it. If you suspect the fuel pump, hook up a pressure gauge to the fuel delivery hose/line - you should have approximately 50 psi to the injectors. The problem could also be caused by wiring/connectors at the fuel pump or inside the fuel tank at the fuel pump.

I have a 2004 Daytona 600. It's been sitting for several years. I changed the battery, oil, gas, and spark plugs but it still won't start. Engine turns but don't know of it's not getting gas or fuel.

You should hear the pump in the gas tank turn on for 2 seconds when you turn the key to on, not start. A buzz or hum from the tank area? If yes, the pump is supposed to put enough pressure in the line to the engine and the injectors for the car to start. Maybe not enough pressure if it won't start. Change the fuel filter and try again. If no help, maybe a weak, tired pump. You will need the fuel pressure checked to compare to specs for your model . Autozone and others rent or loan fuel pressure testers.

If no noise from the pump, check the fuel pump fuse, under the hood in the power distribution center or fuse/relay box. In that same place is the fuel pump relay. Locate the pump relay from a diagram on the fuse/relay cover. Hold your finger lightly on this pump relay while someone cycles the ignition key from off to on. If the pump circuit is working right, you should feel the relay click. That should send power to the fuel pump to turn it on for that 2 second period. If you feel it click and the fuse is good, possibly the pump or the pump's ground wire is faulty. If you don't feel the relay click with key turned to on, the fuel pump circuit will have to be diagnosed. Good luck with your project. Let me know how you progress.

Wants to start but wont turn on,turns on with starting fluid but shuts of quick delgadocruzjr@gmail.com

not getting any fuel. check fuel pump relay and fuses. if ok check fuel pump and filter. the best way to check fuel pump is to get under car and have someone turn ignition to on, do not try to start. and feel for a vibration by putting hand on tank. you may have to do this a few times, because the pump only runs a few seconds to bring fuel pressure to engine. when running pump is on all the time.

Cranks but wont start ,sputters but wont start has fuel in tank, it is a 1999 cougar V-6

Hi!!It sounds like your fuel pump is not working. Check fuel pump relay on engine compartment fuse box have somebody to turn the ignition key to the RUN position, DO NOT CRANK ENGINE (feel if the relay clicks when the key is turned, it will only be energized for a couple of seconds and then you should feel when it gets de-energized. if relay is OK, remove the fuel tank gas cap and repeat the same key operation, listen to the fuel pump coming in, again this will be running only for a couple of seconds, try a few times until you are sure one way or the other. If fuel pump works, then replace fuel filter and try to start vehicle. If vehicle does not start. You need to check fuel pump pressure. borrow a tester form Autozone or similar auto parts store. The fuel pressure should be between 30-40 psi with key ON engine OFF. If pressure is off either way, replace fuel pump. Here is how to hook up the fuel pressure tester 1kbron_71.jpg
Good Luck! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

2000 GMC Sonoma will not start after standing serveral hours

Check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve, you should have 62 to 65 PSI when the fuel system is primed. (engine not running) With the engine started and running the pressure should drop by 5 PSI, anything less then 62 PSI in your fuel system when trying to start the engine will cause a no start. Note; that try to start a the engine by pouring gas through the throttle body may cause an internal fire in the intake ports and will cause the fuel injectors to melt creating a more expensive problem. As for the fuel pump in the gas tank, it''s held on by and snap ring which you can remove with a simple screw driver. Good luck and keep me posted, and don't for get to replace the wire harness from the frame to the gas tank. It's a $12.00 investment that's worth more then it's cost.

1998 Outback SUW Auto 2.5 Accelerate, relay clicking sound

currently, I have the same type of problem with my98 legacy outback limited w automatic. The clicking on mine is definitely the fuel pump relay which is to the left of the pedals under the driver side dash panels. It is above the fuse box and I had to remove the fuse box to get my hand up there to feel what was clicking. My problem is more prevalent when the car is cold. Things that have been diagnosed and replaced are: fuel pump, fuel pump relay (heavy duty), ignition relay(heavy duty), ECU, TCU, alternator, ignition coil, and fuel filter. I've had my car in the shop a few times and my mechanic is stumped. He's had it hooked up to the computer and checked all of the circuits that can affect that relay. It's very hard to diagnose because it is so intermittent. The only thing that ever changed the problem was a used ignition control module(possibly a bad one) which made it click a lot more. I am going to see if Subaru can test the ignition control module because they, many times, do not give you any codes and they do very weird things to the way cars run. I hope one of us finds the answer to this problem.

2.2 shuts off and fuel pump will not turn on

sounds like the "run" fuel pump relay is going bad. This truck should have two different fuel pump relays on it. One for the start cycle and one for run. They should be in the fuse block under the hood. I don't know which one it is though but you should be able to tell by feeling them while someone else cycles your keys on and off. Note that if the fuel pump has already pressurized the fuel line it may not kick on when you turn the key.
