Have a diesel shop check it. I think there is a problem with the injector seals.

Ford had a lot of problems with this engine. Most diagnosis requires a factory software scanner or one that can interface with the FICM module (fuel injector control module) Now you can perform injector buzz test and glow plug tests. If you can get running then also do a power balance test these test check fuel injectors statically and dynamically with the common rail oil pressure control sensor. These FICM modules are famous failure parts. Napa auto can get them.

it sounds like to that it is either worn/ old injectors,dirtly HPOP (high pressure oil pump) oil worn HPOP pump or dirty fuel filters or fuel. you can take truck to a qualified diesel shop and they can do a buzz test on your injectors and see if they need to be replaced with a buzz test the tester will buzz all eight injectors with engine off and you can hear the buzz of the injectors then it will go through and buzz each injectors individually in firing order to der determin witch ones are bad. the bad injectors will be alot quieter than the other and most testing equipent will show what they are running at. hope this helps.

I have an 1996 f250 powerstroke and it is running rough.


The most common problem is a bad fuel injector but if you haven't already done so--check to make sure your oil level is all the way up to full.Power Strokes use a high pressure oil pump to operate their injectors and if your oil is at a low level it can cause air pockets in the lines going to the injectors.It's not a real common problem but I 've seen it happen maybe 10 times.Another cause is using the wrong kind of oil.Some oils have a tendency to foam at high pressures and can produce air in those same injector supply lines. Oil leak on a 2001 7.3 liter powerstroke


my 7.3 f-250 diesel is leaking a lot of oil and in a short time . I cant find where its leaking ? I just washed the motor and waiting for it to dry and look again/. The pan on top by filter was full of oil before i washed it.

Loss of power 97 7.3 powerstroke. Seem like its hitting a governor or not getting enough fuel. Changed fuel supply pump but still not fixed. have a black and decker code reader that shows no codes. any...


I know this sounds basic but check the oil level, the oil actuates the fuel injectors on these engines. If you had the oil changed I've heard of places only putting 5qts back in, these engines require 15-16 quarts.

Put new glow plugs in ran fine for 1 day now it wont start..


You may want to surf around on some of the powerstroke forums for detailed answers, but I know the powerstrokes use oil pressure to control the injectors so you may have some problems with the high pressure oil pump.
Again, it is just a guess. I just wanted to point you to some of the Ford Powerstroke forums which may be of much more help for you.

02 F250 Powerstroke almost starting then just chugging


You got a 7.3liter diesel. First thing to do is make sure the oil is at the proper level and if its real dirty change it. Powerstrokes have to have correct oil level to start and it needs to be clean. Next I would change the fuel filter. If it still doesnt start you need to have the fuel psi checked it should be about 60psi key on engine off, 50-55psi running. If that checks correct you will need to hook it up to a diagnostic scanner and scan for codes, you could have an Injector Driver Module failure ($900), or a high psi oil leak in the system (to check that you need to look at the hi psi oil pid it needs to read 600psi to start. These motors are a bit complicated hope I helped some.

Could be one of many things:

-Clogged fuel filter
-Leaking fuel line
-Bad fuel pump
-High or low oil level
-Overdue oil change (Will explain both these possible causes later)
-Bad high pressure oil pump, ICP sensor (injection control pressure sensor), ICR (injection control pressure regulator), or bad HEUI injectors, or oil lines
-Leak in the high pressure oil system (unlikely because you would have noticed this... This does not go undetected as the underside of your vehicle would be literally covered in oil and dripping in a very short period of time after the leak develops)
(Powerstroke engines use a HEUI fuel injection system, "Hydraulically actuated/electronically controlled unit injection", which relies on a high pressure hydraulic pump that uses engine crankcase oil and pumps it at high pressure (500 psi or so). This oil is sent to your fuel injectors to provide means for actuating them and pressurizing the fuel into the cylinders. High or low engine oil level, or old, diluted, additive depleted oil will cause this system to aerate the oil and result in poor fuel injection capabilities)

There might be other causes but this is the Powerstroke`s weak point... The HEUI system was first designed by Caterpillar, which makes a lot of excellent/bulletproof HEUI based engines, both in passenger vehicle and heavy trucks and equipment. The Powerstroke is an engine designed and made by International Truck and Engine, which cannot seem to make a HEUI engine, in any market, whether passenger, heavy truck, or equipment that does not suffer from fuel injection issues.
