Question about 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette

1 Answer

2000 Olds Silhouette (3.4L) coolant change/flush.

Need to replace coolant on 2000 Olds Silhouette with 150k miles, 3.4l engine. Would like to add cleaner and backflush entire system. To backflush, manual says you have to remove exhaust cross-over pipe (& TBI?) to access thermostat housing bolts. Don't relish having to tear apart exhaust, then R&R multiple times to flush coolant, add cleaner, and reflush. Is there an alternative?

Or is drain and fill sufficient with Dexcool. Will heater cores drain properly?

Used to be able to install a garden hose backflush fitting into a heater hose. Is this feasible on this vehicle with front & rear heater cores? Can't really access both heater outlet hoses to install fitting.

Thanks - Sleet

Power flushing is usually not a good thing as the heater cores can become blocked.I would suggest to remove the lower rad hose and drain as much coolant as possible.Refill with clear water with lower hose reattached.Bleed system of air as you fill with water and keep filling until operating temp is reached.Drive and return and drain it again the same way,now refill with at least 1 and 1/2 gallons of dexcool and don't forget to add the vegetable based aluminum protector required in your vehicle available from gm and make sure you bleed the air from the system from the valve just to the rear of the rad filler neck on the engine at the end of the coolant pipe running across the front of the engine.

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive not working

First, check the transfer case and make sure it's full.
If you have the electric shift system in your vehicle, a servo motor could be failing, or the switch may be going bad. Even the switches on these systems are expensive so good, accurate testing must be done to verify failure of anything before you start replacing stuff. If it's not electric, check linkage to transfer case... something may be loose and sliding out of adjustment. Todays systems are just too complex to give accurate answers without hands-on testing. Many times several different items can give similar symptoms. That is why most shops say "bring it in and we will look at it".
good luck

Hello Taz..might check the converter to make sure the exhaust system does not have excessive backpressure. Also make sure the electronic cooling fans are cycling...they should kick in and out. They are tied into the A/C system circuit with a relay.
The 3.1L and 3.4L V-6 Engine (VINs J, E - RPOs LG8, LA1) were known to have intake gasket failure. This was due to a bad gasket that was designed by GM...it had nylon in it...Over 400,000 of these were sold in Canada alone. The gasket has since been redesigned and torque specs recalculated. If you replace the manifold gaskets follow these guidelines.

Install a new design intake manifold gasket. The material used in the gasket has been changed in order to improve the sealing qualities of the gasket. When replacing the gasket, the intake manifold bolts must also be replaced and torqued to a revised specification. The new bolts will come with a pre-applied threadlocker on them.

Notice

An oil leak may result if the vertical bolts are not tightened before the diagonal bolts.

Diagonal bolts may require a crows foot to tighten.

Tighten

1. Tighten the vertical lower intake manifold bolts (1) to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

2. Tighten the diagonal lower intake manifold bolts (2) to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

3. Tighten the vertical lower intake manifold bolts (1) to 13 N.m (115 lb in).

4. Tighten the diagonal lower intake manifold bolts (2) to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

Good luck...i hope this helps.

How to flush coolant system in 1998 Olds Silhouette

Here's a link to read about your Olds. Here's a kit that has instructions how to flush. You need to drain the system, the drain valve is located on lower driver side of the radiator. When the system is dry, shut the valve and fill the radiator with new coolant. Fill until the coolant runs out the top, fill the overflow tank to cold mark.
Start the engine and let it warm up until the thermosat opens. Standing in front of the vehicle there is a small bleed valve located on the right just above the thermostat open it until the coolant comes out and shut it back off. Located on the left of the engine just above the water pump is another bleed valve, do the same with it. You may have to do this two or three times before you have all the air out of the system.

2001 olds silhouette engine overheats

Time for Intake Gaskets and possibly head gaskets, very common problem with these, the intake gaskets go bad and the coolant actually burns in the cylinder and of course the cylinder pumps air into the coolant system because of intake gaskets being bad. :-(

Service 100 thousands miles

The 04 was pretty straight forward.

Change the oil and filter when the display tells you to. (Don't forget to reset Oil Life system!)
when the display tells you to change engine oil... Do the following as well:
~Lube Chassis Components
~Check Tires for Air and Damage
~Inspect Break System
~Check Engine Fluids and Washer System
~Check Power Steering System
~Check Wiper Blades
~Check Restraint System
~Lube Body Components (See manual)
~Replace Cabin Air Filter (Located in firewall on passenger side.)

Every 25K miles do the following:
~ Inspect Fuel System, Exhaust System, Accessory Drive Belts for damage or wear.
~ Replace Air Cleaner

Ever 50K Miles
~ If used for Towing - Replace Transfer Case Fluid :: If not change fluid ever 75Kk miles.

Every 100k Miles
~ Change Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter
~ Change Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter again at 150k if heavy service
~ Replace Spark Plugs

Every 150k miles
~ Change Engine Coolant (Or every 5 years which ever comes first!)
~ Replace Engine Accessory Drive Belt

optional y are supposed to change the transfer case fluid every 50k if towing

My 2000 Olds Silhouette with 150k also had its low oil pressure light come on and is dinging. Any ideas of extent of problem and solutions.

Quite a few of these vans had issues with the instrument panel cluster causing this problem. There is an updated program to recalibrate the cluster to not set the low oil pressure light on. Go to a GM dealer and have them reprogram the IPC.

Just did the head gasket on a 02 olds silhouette and there is still oil in the coolant could it be the oil cooler leaking into the radiator or is there still a problem with the head gasket

the head gasket is fine you can check this by watching the radiator and oil levels if they dont move at all then there is still oil from the previous blown head gasket in cooling system they do make a supper strong cooling system cleaner for that type of stuff its made by prestone and works really good you might have to use it a few times.

Wher is the thermostat located on a 2000 olds silhouette?

Follow the large radiator inlet hose from the radiator, to the thermostat housing. Once the housing is located, simply remove the housing to expose the thermostat. It may be necessary to remove the air cleaner and duct assembly, and the crossover exhaust pipe, as well.

Rapidly rising temperature in 2000 Olds Silhouette

Could easliy be your water pump. The coolant in the radiator isn't being forced through the engine by the water pump causing the coolant to be cool and motor overheating. A thermostat can also cause this problem, but I belive it's the water pump.
