1988 mazada 323 hatch back won't start. starter is good. battery, connections are good. when i turn the key i here the start click. i took it to autozone to be tested and came back good.

Could it be the engine is locked up? Try turning crank with socket wrench each way a little to see if locked. If so, remove all spark plugs and try again. Still locked?

If your battery has been tested OK, and Bosch is a very good battery by the way, then a clicking sound from the starter motor contactor means it is not getting sufficient current. This means a bad conductivity somewhere. If the engine turns over when you use a jump start from another vehicle, it suggests that there is enough energy to overcome the poor conductivity. The most likely culprit is the inside of the battery terminal connectors, which may have a layer of contaminant which is limiting the good connection. Clean the inside of the terminal connectors with an abrasive action and make sure the bolts are tight. Failing that, the same problem may exist where the cable from the battery joins the starter motor. Check both the primary circuit (through ignition key relay) and the secondary circuit which carries the starting current. This, unfortunately usually means getting to a hard to access place (where the starter motor is mounted) Good luck. Cheers, Don.

My lights, windows, and radio all work fine. But it won't start it makes a click noise but nothing. Then we thought it was the battery so we jumped it and now it won't even make no click noise at...

The "click" sound condition make us guess that could be a bad ignition switch or starter.

It turned out to be the starter. I first took the battery to have it tested and it was fine. Next, I took the starter apart and took it to Autozone to have it tested? and it was bad. It is not easy access to remove the starter. The intake manifold and exhaust system are in the way and need to be taken apart first. See instructions below:

- Take off Intake

- Take off Starter

Hope this helps (remember to rating this answer and leave some comment).

It sounds like a fault in the starter circuit. It could be a defective neutral safety switch, starter solenoid, or possible a defective ignition switch but I doubt it. Can you hear the starter solenoid??? I'm willing to bet the problem is either with starter relay, neutral safety switch, or starter solenoid.

It sounds like you need a new starter. If you hear the starter click when you turn the key to start, replace your starter since you already replaced the battery. You might want to have your alternator checked out, or when you get your car started, test the battery terminals with a multimeter. You should have around 14 volts with the car running. If not, you will need a new alternator. The alternator won't keep the car from starting though, unless the battery was drained because it wasn't charged. Even then it is the battery keeping the car from starting.

If the starter is not clicking, check your fuses under the hood. If all checks out, you may have a bad ignition switch.

Fx45. Won't start. Took out battery had it tested and it is good-all lights radio work when try to start it . Took key out of intelligent key to try to start it-it clicks but won't start- any ideas?

Hi, first try a jump start. If it will jump satrt, clean and tighten the battery terminals. If it will not jump start, take the starter/solenoid out and have it tested at your local parts chain. For more info, please see my tip at . Please let me know if you need instructions or have any other questions, and thanks for using FixYa.
