That would actually be a Alternator problem as the truck is running the alternator should have enough voltage. no battery needed after engine running.

Either the battery is totally no good or your vehicle is not charging at high enough rate to keep it running

Full Power Loss

I would take a different but not real easy approach---I would reverse the process and remove the new stereo unit and have all wires connected if possible back to the original radio---you may have a ground wire hooked to wrong place etc.

If this happened as a result of replacing the radio back track to see what you have--in over 30 years of repairing electronic equipment whenever a new issue appears instantly after doing something---back up and undo what you did.

Just a suggestion.

I had the alternator checked and it is fine and battery as well, but it will still not start! When I jumped it last night it started right up but as soon as I took the jumper cables off it died and will...

my guess is whoever checked your battery was wrong!! if you have a walmart near you, or a parts supply house ( autozone, Oreillys something along those lines) ask them to Load test your battery , my guess is that you have a dead cell if not more, it will and can still say 12 volts, but doesn't have the necessary amps to crank the motor over , Napa will also do this as well as the alternator check,, just make sure all the connections are clean and tight,, remove the battery cables and use a wire brush to clean the posts,, especially if you have a side mount battery ,,

It only starts with a jump and dies out soon after you take the jumper cables off but while its on it will go into gear, but it starts to smoke

If your charging system isn't working, It will drain your battery voltage, and eventually stall. Jumper cables supply voltage from another vehicle. You will need to get the charging system tested. If you can use a volt meter, you can get an idea if it's charging. You normally have 12.5 volts at the battery posts, with the engine off, and around 14 volts running. This is if it's working correctly.

Went hunting came back and parked 04 dakota in yard went to start wont start, hooked jumper cables up to it and it started but as soon as i took it off it died. so i took the alternator in to have it...

Most likely:
1. The battery has a dead cell.
2. The battery terminals need to be cleaned. Remove both battery cables and clean cable clamps and battery terminals. May not need a boost.
3. The negative cable is loose where it is connected to engine ground. Or damaged, corroded, or otherwise not making a good connection.
