How do I open hood when cable or latch is broken

If the plastic hood release handle inside is broken, can you reach the steel cable, if so, use a pair of vice grips to grab the cable and pull. Sometimes it helps to have a helper standing at the end of the hood and pop the hood with palm of hand, in the area of under hood release mechanism, at the same time your pulling the cable.

If cable is broken, some makes and models, you can remove front grille and get at under hood release mechanism.

There is usually a primary hood release, inside vehicle, and a secondary release under the hood, you have to slide your hand under the hood to release, sometimes you have to press down on the hood a little to move release. Trying to shut the hood with secondary release engaged can be difficult, you don't have the distance and the weight of hood to swing down.

My 1989 Volvo 240 gl hood won't open cable doesn't pop hood, what can i do to open it

You have 2 choices. You can try to grab the cable through the grill, cut it then see if the wire can then be pulled to release the hood.
Another option is to go from underneath with big screwdriver to move the latch thus releasing the hood latch. Not sure if you can get access to it on this vehicle easily. try a flashlight and from under the car reach way up into the latch area.

2008 Mitsubishi release cable for Hood not working. When pulling on release inside car, the hood does not pop open to reach under and release the safety latch

I have a similar problem on my 2006 VW Passat.

I'm able to open the hood two ways:
1) ask someone to hold onto the lever inside the car while you try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood fully.

2) Pull the lever completely open in the car and try to find a thick screwdriver or some thick paper folded up to wedge next to the lever to hold it open while you get out and try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood completely.

Other than this finding a service manual or tutorial online about how to pull out whatever trim or interior covers you would need to replace the cable fully. There should be a specific replacement guide for this item since I'm sure it happens to car's at least semi-regularly

BROKE CABLE TO OPEN BONNET ON MY 2000 GOL GTI

You'll have to get your hand in there around the hood latch, and lever the latch over towards the driver's side. The lever that the cable hooks to.
Sometimes you have to pull the grill off to get your hand in there. And sometimes you can lay under the car and reach your arm up to get to the latch. You may have to move something aside to get your hand up there. Use a screwdriver or something to push the lever over to open the hood.
Good luck.

The pull cable is not opening the hood and is broke. How can I manually open it?

I had this same issue with my 94 vision as often happens when you have to open the hood a lot to add oil and such as the car ages and begins to leak or burn oil or other fluids. (or both as with mine.) I ended up cutting back the plastic housing around the pull cable with a utility (razor) blade to expose the cable and use a pair of vise-grips (needle-nose works best for the "wrapping/bracing of the wire.") to grab the wire very tightly about 1/3 to 1/2 of an inch or more in front (depends on your vise grip choice) of where it's exposed by your cut. BEFORE YOU PULL, (this is what the space u leave is for..) wrap the cable around the end of the needle-nose on the vise grip to brace it and keep it from pulling out of the grips as quite a bit of "pull" is required to move this cable as it ages. Once you have released the latch, (you can feel and hear it give just like when you used to pull the lever) you will need to hold the cable and move your grips up to the black casing or apply a second vise grips snug to the casing to keep the latch open if your hood no longer pops up automatically like mine. If that is the case, don't forget to release your vise grips to allow the latch to close before you close the hood or it will open/pop up while driving which could be bad...lol.

How do I open the hood of a Mitsubishi L300 ?

  1. Locate the interior hood-release lever under the dashboard on the driver's side of the interior of the car.

  2. 2

Lift up and toward you on the hood release lever. The lever is connected to a cable that releases the hood. The hood will pop up about 1/2 inch when you pull the lever.

  3. 3

Move to the front of the car and locate the exterior hood-release lever under the front of the hood. It is located near the middle of the vehicle, just beyond where the front edge of the hood meets the body. Lift up on the inner lever.

  4. 4

Lift up on the edge of the hood while holding the inner lever in place. When the hood is up, find the hood prop and raise it, setting its tip in the hood-prop mount on the hood, to hold the hood up while you work in the engine bay.

When I pull the hood release the hood dosnt pop, you can hear the wire moving under the hood but its not doing nothing.. how do I get it open?

Sounds like the latch is slightly out of adjustment. Have someone pull up on the hood edge while you release the hood from inside. Once open, spray some white lithium grease on both components of the hood latch. The latch strike bolts usually have slotted holes to allow for adjustment. If you loosen them slightly, and then close the hood, it should align itself, then open the hood carefuly and retighten the bolts.. IF you cannot get the hood open, chances are the cable is loose from the release, and you may have to remove part of the grille to access the underside of the latch to replace the cable.

My hood will not open. When I pull on the hood release lever I hear a popping noise as if the hood releases but it doesn't.

first, try smacking the hood at one of the front corners while someone else pulls the release handle. or even after you've pulled on it. if that works, once open, adjust and lubricate the hood latch assembly. if it still won't open, and it's the cable and not the latch you'll have to replace it anyway, so instead of removing the grill, cut the cable behind the pull lever under the dash where you can reach it. then skin the outer cable insulation away from the actual steel cable exposing an inch or two of it. then holding the insulation and plastic housing with pliers, grab the steel cable itself with pliers and pull it to open the hood. then replace the cable. the further you can reach up under the panel the better your chances of getting past the broken part of the cable and avoid removing the grill. you might also be able to gain access from up under the car if you're lucky.

Hood release cable isn't connected to interior hood release lever

Your going to have to use vice grips or pliers. Just pull hard till you hear the hood pop open or have a friend push down on the hood so you can pull in the hood cable easier to unlock the hood latch. Good luck and keep me posted.
