Why is lower radiator hose cold when motor is at operating temperature?

Ensure thermostat is installed right side up or it wont allow proper flow. If thermostat is correct other problems could be Air in cooling system, low coolant level, plugged rad internal, water pump failure, coolant flow valve stuck, internal engine combustion leak to cooling system.

Where is the temp. sensor on a 2001 ford focus zx3

Should be in the water neck where the thermostat housing is. It'll be where the lower radiator hose connects to the motor.

2001 Ford Focus: suddenly started leaking coolent. appears to be leakin at the backside of the engine. I am thinking it is a bad hose. Your thoughts

1. Replace all hoses. (top and bottom radiator, and to the heater, there should be two of them).
2. Replace thermostat, and thermostat gasket.

Where is the thermostat located on 2001 ford focus?

The purpose of the thermostat is to regulate the coolant system to prevent the engine from overheating. A faulty thermostat will stick and not allow the coolant to enter the engine.
Follow the upper rad hose to the engine and at the engine there is the thermostat housing.
Undo the bolts and lift off the connector and replace the thermostat. The thermostat housing is attached with three bolts.Lift the thermostat out of the housing. The thermostat rests at the bottom of the housing.
-------This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

What is the part the goes on the hose for the splitters that connects to the three hoses for the cooling system on a 2001 Ford Focus ZTS?

I assume that you are talking about the Thermostat Housing. (The plastic thing where the upper radiator hose mounts, along with a heater hose and a bypass hose.) These are bad about cracking and leaking. Dorman makes a replacement assembly for this. The kit comes with the entire assembly, including the thermostat. It should be available at most any parts store.

I plan to replace the Thermostat housing when replacing the thermostat and upper radiator hose. Questions: - Should sealant be used between the thermostat housing o-ring and the engine sealing surface? If...

no sealant should be needed.clean both surfaces sure 'o' ring stays in place & thermostat is installed'll probably only fill the hose as the thermostat will be closed, but that won't hurt.keep proper level in over flow tank,it will bleed air out itself in a day or 2

Can't find coolant drain plug

It should be on the passenger-side of the bottom of the radiator, facing the rear of the Focus. If not you will need to remove the lower radiator hose.
