The neutral safety switch on the tranny is going out. Replace this switch and you should not have any more problems. This switch registers that your foot is on the brake before it will allow it to come out of park to keep kids from accidently engaging the shifter.

Had same thing , replace the brake switch attatched to the brake pedal, easy fix, cost 30 bucks at dealership, if switch is out you cannot get out of park except by turning off car, shift to nuetral then start car and put in drive, as well as obviously no brk lights, they do this as a safety measure

The mechanism in the steering column for your turn signals also controls the brake lights and hazard. It is fairly common for it to fail especially if you have tilt wheel. BEWARE OF THE AIR BAG. Lee

Use a test light, test for power and ground at the bulb contacts. Then test for power and ground at the wires. Probably needs a new socket, common problem.

I assume the fuse has power if the hazards work.
The third brake light skips the turn signal switch, the regular brake light circuit goes thru the turn signal switch.
Do you have power going into the turn signal switch on the red lite green wire from the brake switch ?

96 ford taurus gear shift stuck in park

CHECK IF THE BRAKE LIGHT COME ON WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF DON'T. CHECK BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. COULD BE A BRAKE SWITCH. THERE IS A shift lock solenoid that receives a signal when the key is on and the brake pedal is depressed that allows you to move the shift lever to be taken out of park.

My 2001 ford focus is stuck in park, stepping on brake, does not release it from park, and brake lights are not working.........

Without the brake lights working the shift interlock can't release. Turn the key just off the "locked" position and you should be able to shift to neutral and start the engine then shift to drive or reverse. Just don't shift back into park until you are parking the car to leave it.

Can't get my 2000 ford taurus out of park

The gear selector is locked until the system detects the brake pedal is being pressed, the brake circuit then sends a signal to the shifter release solenoid to pull a pin back and let you shift out of park, this is a safety feature required by federal law, U need to have someone see if the brake lights go on when you press the pedal, if they don't check the switch at the top of the brake pedal, if the brake lights work then the little solenoid is defective.
