Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

I have a problem with my passlock system on my 2001 Alero. Who works on this type of problem? When I bought the car they replaced the ignition switch twice with a used unit because the key would come out in the accesssory position instead of in the off position. Does my passlock issue relate to the fact that the ignition swithc is not original to my car? Annette

Yes the best thing you can do is go to your local dealership and let them relearn the passlock system to your new lock and key assembly.

It still sounds like a passkey or theft deterrent issue. The check engine light is most likely a B2865 or B2860 code for an invalid key, likely related to the ignition switch being replaced. The passlock sensor is inside the ignition switch, and could have been damaged during install. Try just turning the key on and watch the security light, if it starts to flash after a few minutes, keep the key on for 10 minutes (or until it stops flashing). Then retry to start. You may have to have it scanned for further diagnosis.

Security light keeps blinking and car wont start

try this reset procedure, if it doesn't work the dealer must be consulted, there is problem with the security control module, if the module is in need of replacing the part must be programed to accept your ignition key.

PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET ALL GM CARS 1999 AND UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the PASSKEY system to recognize your key.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero, Passlock 2

There have been alot of this type problem you describe. That body style of GM car has had meny ignition issues with the PASSLOCK 2 system. The system for some reason thought it was being stolen, and shut down. The security light might not blink or come on at all in some cases. It should but may not. (if there are issues with the BCM (Body Control Module) or ECM (engine Control Module) The Chime you heard may have been a security reset indicator notice. Thlling you that the Security System incountered a problem, and was ready again.

We need to reset the computer on a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

HI there if the scan tool you are using will not reprogram the theft module the try the 10 min relearn

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  5. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. Important: The vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
  6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password.
  7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles
