Fuel system issues

The spedo and the tach both dropping together means that something they share in common is failing. They share the electrical system, of course, but then so does the battery and service lights. So it *probably* is not a full power disconnect.

The other thing they share is the Electronic Control Module.... (Sorry.)

Spend a little time going through and disconnecting, then reconnecting everything. the scraping action can clean the contacts enough to do the trick. Make sure the ECM has sufficient ground, that it's not loose, etc.

The loss of power and shudder both can be either fuel or spark (but almost certainly not air flow). The next time this happens, the second it resolves turn the engine off. Coast to the side of the road, then inspect some of the plugs to see if they show any signs of the presence of fuel without spark, or any signs of being lean, such as shaky fuel delivery might create. Chances are that this drill will be a bust, but you might catch a break and further narrow down the problem.

If its just the speedo failing and the rev counter works ok, its likely to be the speed sensor which is on the gearbox. This will have to be removed as soon as possible to avoid engine damage! Expect to pay about £30-40 not £128 like some have paid from a Ford dealer.

The speed sensor as well as talking to the speedo to say how fast youre doing also talks to the fuel pump and adjusts the amount of fuel to send to the engine according to the speed your doing. So, if it thinks youre doing 0mph, it will supply a minimum amount of fuel and is likely to stall when slowing down. You might notice a lack of power whilst the speedo is failing as its starving the engine of fuel, causing it to run a lean mixture, which also burns hotter and could overheat and damage the engine.
