Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee with 4 wheel drive, when I start out the transmission takes a long time to shift into high gear, probably around 4o to 50 MPH. Someone said it is the transmission modual and has to be replaced?

Hi and thanks for the opinion,

It sounds like it is one or the other problem you described, however before I go to a mechanic and have him order all of these parts, cn you estimate the time involved to have ot done, and approximate price for the parts.

    Thanks

This is possible, to check the valve by going under your jeep and looking at the back part of the transmission. You will see a valve with a vacuum line going to it, it is usually located at rear of trans just above trans pan. To check pull vacuum line off, if fluid comes out the valve is bad and needs to be replaced. They can be purchased at most auto parts stores readily. If no fluid the trans may just need serviced.

If shifting is slow, then the problem is often related to throttle position detection. Throttle position is detected by the TPS (throttle position sensor). TPS is located on the throttle body. Input from TPS is used by TCM (transmission control module) to determine when to send the impulse to transmission shift solenoid. If high gear does not switch at all, then can also be a defective shift solenoid. The transmission switch solenoid located inside the trasmission, in the valve body. The throttle position sensor must replaced. If the problem is still there, check the transmission switch solenoids and valve body, and the TCM.

Try neutral. or in drive, but just crawling. Give light pressure to the stick and sort of let it just fall into 4x4

My gear shift is stuck in 2 wheel drive and won't shift to 4 wheel

how long ago was the last time you shifted it into 4 wheel drive? does the selector move? if not the cable could be locked up, got corroded or could just be kinked up, it is located underneath the vehicle on top of the transmission, get it up on jackstands and with a drop iight look at the cable while having someone else try shifting it into 4 wheel drive, if where it hooks to the transmission appears to be trying to move back and forth as they are trying to move it, they cable is probably fine, check to see that the linkage is clear of any obstructions,

I have a 1999 jeep cherokee that has intermitant transmission problems 1)shifting up it wind out to 2k-3k before shifting 2) at higher speed it feels as if it slips out of overdrive rpm increase but speed...

It will shift out of overdrive upon increasing throttle , pulling hills and so on. Your overdrive probably kicks in around 35 to 45mph and kicks back out as you increase throttle. Electrically controled speed sensor to control the response. Overwise the engine would bog down to a stall. Over drive is just that. It changes the gearing ratio to over drive meaning less then final gear 4 to 1 down to 4 to 3 etc more direct drive ratio to lessen consumtion of fuel with less stress on engine. Have shift speed sensor adjusted. Don't drive in overdrive in city if most driving is under 45mph

4 wheel drive is messed up

Have you tried letting up on the thhrottle at the same time you shift? That takes the load off the gears and allows the shift to freely occur. Good Luck, Ned
