Question about 1996 Lincoln Continental

I have a 1996 lincoln cont. and the rear air shocks wont air up,the air compresors mounts are bad and it makes alot of noise when it comes on and off,i have new air bags on the front,where should i start checking for my problem,and is their a way to check if the air compresor is working properly.robjt12YAHOO.COM

Arnott replacement springs for 96 Continental are to weak. Arnott has been no help. They seem like they don't understand what a weak spring is. Car bottoms out with one 150lb. person in the back seat.

I own a 2001 lincoln continental I just converted from air shocks to regular shocks. Since then it has been making a bad pop sound as if the trunk is letting and falling back down HELP!


Recheck your work and make sure you did not miss any bushings and there are no loose bolts, then if that does not solve the issue you will have to pinpoint the noise. Hard to tell from the picture but it looks as if the rubber bushing seat on the shock might be hitting the mounting assembly, if it is you should see some signs of it with a close inspection.

Rear thumping noise


probably shocks have someone bounce to get noise going and put your hands on suspension parts you should feel the bump as well this will narrow down

Where is the air ride system pump located on a 1996 lincoln town car. i also need to no how to get a diagram of it>


It is possibly located under either one of the front guards, I had a 1990 ford fairlane (Australian) and that is where the Air Ride compressor was located in that.
They usually run dry and wont pump the Air into the system, I removed the 2 rear Air Shocks from mine and replaced them with normal air shocks that you pump up at the garage and never had any more trouble.

No. The Lincoln Continental does not have air bags in the front. It is not exactly hard to convert the rear airbags to springs. It is more time consuming than anything. I have a 1996 Town Car, I had a mechanic replace the air shocks with springs.

How old are they? As old as the car? If yes, it is time for new shocks. If they were lifetime guaranteed replacement shocks and you put them on (had them put on) and you can prove it, go back and collect on the warranty.

Of course there could be other considerations but lets start there.

How can i check if the air compresor is working on my 2004 navigator air suspension system


When you first turn it on in the morning the compressor should come on to level the vehicle. They are usually mounted under the hood or somewhere in the rear of the vehicle and will make a slight buzzing noise when you get close to it.. You will know its working when the vehicle stays level and has a somewhat cushioned ride (the air struts have air in them)

check for leak need 2 people , each wheel supposed to have separate line going from compressor , i have one of my friends navi in my garage and the rear bags are blown did not change them yet i would give you some more info.

Rear air shocks don't rise.


possible bad leveler mounted near the trailing arm, check to see if the connecting rod is still attached left side

If Jay's tips don't pan out, consider having your shocks checked since these can produce a loud rattle if the seals are blown.
A preliminary check can be made using the 'bounce' test. Pressing down and letting up on a fender several times in succession until the car is bobbing good. When you let go on a downstroke, the car should come up once, settle and move no more. If it kind of fades, with several shorter bounces, the shock is bad.
