Question about 1997 Jeep Wrangler
97' Wrangler 4.0L 4cyl 5spd.
When i idle, it usuallt goes below 1k rpm, between 250-300 rpm.
sometimes the oil pressure will tank to nothing and the CHECK GUAGES alarm sounds. Then all of a sudden, rpm shoots back to 2k, oil pressure back to normal. This usually happens when im crusing with the clutch.
When at a light, or stopped, it has dropped rpm, oil pressure tanks and Jeep dies. Then sometimes have a hard time starting back up.
I can usually save it from dying if i press on the gas a little.
I should add, a few months after i bought it from a dealership, i found out that it has been de-cat pre purchase.
If your vehicle was purchased in the USA, it is against federal law for a dealer to sell it without a cat. If you are somewhere else, I have no idea what laws are. I have no idea what "cruising with the clutch" means.
Your oil pressure dropping may only show that at the same time the engine has stalled or is turning so slow that you are not making enough oil pressure. I would check the throttle position sensor, map sensor and idle air control valve for proper readings and operation, also check for minor vacuum leaks. It seems that your idle is too low and allowing the engine to stall. There are other things that can cause this besides what I mentioned but those are the main ones I'd check first. Testing can be done with a decent multi meter and using a chiltons or haynes manual as a guide.
Control systems need testing to get a proper diagnosis...That's one thing I can't do from here.
Do the testing and likely you will find the problem. Many larger parts stores will do a free code scan...that too is helpful.
