Question about 1993 Saturn SC2

2 Answers

Was driving my 2002 Saturn SC2 when suddenly the RPMs went up to seven and the car wouldn't shift. Transmission fluid was all over the engine and on the ground. I pulled over and stopped. Someone told me it could be a busted hose, but I do not see where one would be leaking. Any ideas?

From easy too hard fix on the oil leak in gearbox on the front wheel drive Saturns,
Fairly easy are the oil seals that fit into the transaxle bore.
The other possible fix is inside the transaxle with over 100,000 miles.
The large pinion gear has a steel pin that that shears off the pinion shaft. The shaft then works out by centrifical force slowly grinding a hole in the aluminum transaxle case. major job.

Transmission line; its the only place the liquid would be coming out; unless its the transmission itself.

Abrupt shifts

these cars are prone to motor/transmission mount failure. This can lead to erratic shifting. No guarantees but I have seen this a few times.

I have a 94 Saturn SC2 and without warning all of a sudden my car will not shift into reverse, not sure where to put the transmission fluid, help please!!

firstly it may not be just the fluid because if its driving normally in all forward gears it could be a reverse band failure
If you want to try its on one side of the transmission
its a long tube with a dip stick in it used to check the fluid level!
it will need to be in nuetral & at idle in normal operting temperature range with the hand brake firmly applied! b4 you dip it & see
what the level is
to dip it pull it out wipe it cleane then push it all the way back down the tube & pull it straight back out look at where the fluid is on the stick!
if your not sure do it all again till you have a good reading
id suggest that you just drive it to get it checked but dont get blocked if you cant back up!
Cheers Rob

Transmission will not shift out of 1st gear.

Check your transmission fluid level. If the filter has never been changed, now is a good time to replace the fluid and filter.

2002 saturn sl1 automatic transmission slips/leaks..

what you might be seeing is the fluid that leaked before still coming off the transmission. is the level staying steady ?

it might be slipping or you are more focused on how the transmission shifts now then you were before.

there is a product i have tried on slipping transmissions and it's made by lucas (can't remember the exact name) it basically thickens the transmission fluid to prevent slipping. according to the label it would not void the warrenty (if you have any remaining on that car).

Please take a moment to rate this solution thanks

1997 sc2 saturn automatic

I had a 1991 Dodge Caravan that did the same thing. I had a transmission rebuilt because of the problem you describe. I was told it was a seal inside the transmission that was leaking fluid from an internal chamber when the engine was at an idle (like it is when you are at a stop sign). A redesigned seal fixed my problem. I would bet if you gave it a little gas with one foot and kept your foot on the brake it wouldn't act like it had dropped out of gear. If you have the money for a transmission rebuild that might be something to consider but if you are tight on money, a bottle of lucas transmission additive might help your problem. That seemed to help me so I could get some money together for a transmission rebuild. I realize that most mechanics will say that your transmission doesn't need an additive of any kind, I also realize that sometimes in real life you have to do what your pocketbook/ wallet can afford.

Good luck.
