Its possible that this is a normal function for your car. They don't want you to use your daytime running lights at night because they are much dimmer than the standard headlights, so there is a sensor (usually near or in the windshield) that detects if it is dark outside. If its dark outside, the daytime running lights will not function, forcing you to use the standard headlights.
Yes the screen dims automatically when the lights are on to suit night driving. I am not specifically familiar with the 01 model, however on my 08 model, the display brightness is also manually adjustable via a button located below and to the right of the display. The button is marked with a series of short lines assembled in an arc. Hope this helps.
The switch that you are talking about... the dimmer switch, must not be working. If you have warranty left, i suggest you take it in. If not, maybe find a good auto wrecker, and replace the switch yourself. I'm guessing they'll be expensive.
