Hi
Before you go pulling your fuel system apart, check the distributor to see if your points are OK.. This can make the engine miss just like it's not getting enough fuel

If it start and it misses and like not enough gas. it means that there is a problem in the fuel pump that why you have to check the fuel pump and the fuel lines may be there is a dirt or may be the fuel pump is worn out.But if you don't have time to fix the problem of your fuel pump . Then you have to go to a car mechanic and let them fix the problem of the car. But if you have time to fix the fuel problem then this is what to do.The owner of the car should be able to check fuel lines .Prepare the equipment and tools to be used in checking fuel lines .So that fuel will flow freely and no abstraction within the fuel lines .Locate the fuel lines ,visual inspection on duel lines for learage, Disconnect lines at fuel pump and fuel pump.Use compress air to remove sediments on fuel lines .Re-install fuel line to the unit. But if the problem is the fuel thank that it is being worn out or malfunctioning .The owner of the car should prepare the equipment or tools in servicing the fuel pump.So that fuel pump will operate properly .Locate the fuel pump .disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump.remove the fuel pump from the engine. Dis-assemble the fuel pump.Check the diaphram for defects.Replace defective parts.Assemble and install the fuel pump. And always use safety rules in servicing the fuel pump.

If fuel filter is clogged no gas will reach your injectors. Or maybe the fuel pressure is not high enough due to a weak pump.

Have you done a tune lately on the car?
I would also suspect a fuel pump problem is you've done a tune up recently.

CAR STARTS THEN DIES RIGHT OFF HAVE FUEL AND SPARK COMPRESSION IS ABOUT 105

Sound like the fuel pumps not doing it job if the fuel pressure drops off quick. Might also be the regulator but most likely the fuel pump is not pumping enough. They only time the fuel pressure should drop off it when you bring the rpm up and it shouldn't drop off that much maybe 5 psi at most any thing below that i would change the fuel pump.

Shouldn't cost much for 10 minutes work to test fuel pressure & confirm pump condition, but do it when vehicle 's been running for a while, long enough for pump to get heated up.

1988 toyota p/u 22r carb,

Hello,
Sounds like you have a bad carb. While the choke is on and active it sucks enough gas into the engine to keep it running. To test this problem run the vehicle until it is up to operating temp. Give it the gas and see if it does the miss and sputter thing. Then using a can of either of other flamable carb cleaner spray some into the air cleaner nozzle while the engine is acting up. If it smooths out for a few seconds the the carb is not gertting enough fuel at high rpm. rebuild the carburator paying attention to the fuel ports in case one or more are plugged up. Also look at the fuel level float and see it it is set at the proper height. It has been a while since working on a 22r carb, but I am not sure if thereis a fuel bowl window that you can look at to see the fuel level with a flashlight. it should be at or slightly above the dot on the glass window in the carb. If low it is a fuel problem. Also while working on it check the pressure on the fuel line at the carb. Your service manual should have a recommended pressure for the carb. Regards, rcampsr

Engine Cuts out at 3500 RPM

Sounds like you need to replace the MAF sensor its the unit on toyota vehicles that calulates how much Air intake is going into the throttle body and then sends a signal to the ECU of your car which adjusts your Fuel injector compensation. When your MAF Sensor is malfunctioning it will throw the fuel curves out of wack and cause your car to what mechanics call "lean out" or "running rich" its basically your getting too little or too much fuel at higher RPM's and the motor is choking from too much fuel and not enough air. Hope this helps let me know if it doesnt so i can continue to troubleshoot for you via internet
